Is this what you’re seeing?
The system is generating nothing, or far less than it used to, even on bright days
The inverter is showing an error code, a red or orange light, or a blank screen
The generation meter has stopped moving
Your feed-in tariff payment is lower than it should be
The battery won’t charge, or runs flat long before the evening is over
A breaker keeps tripping on the solar circuit
You can see damage, debris or birds nesting under the panels
Everything looks normal, but the monitoring app shows nothing
If any of those sound familiar, call 0800 156 0191 or use the fault finder further down this page. If a breaker keeps tripping, leave the system switched off until an engineer has looked at it.
Most faults aren’t the panels
When a solar system stops performing, most people assume the panels have failed. In practice, the panels are usually the last thing to go. They have no moving parts and are built to sit on a roof for decades. The problem is far more often somewhere between the roof and your consumer unit — and that’s where we start.
How we find the fault
We work through the system in the same order every time, so nothing gets missed and nothing gets replaced on a guess.
1
The inverter
We read its error log and check its readings against the panels.
2
The DC strings
We test the voltage and current of each string of panels.
3
Isolators and connectors
We look for water, corrosion and faults to earth.
4
The panels
Only then do we look for a cracked, burnt or failed panel.
5
Monitoring and metering
We check the generation meter, Wi-Fi and app.
The inverter is the component most likely to fail, which is why we start there — see inverter repair for the detail. Insulation resistance testing on the DC side shows whether a fault to earth is making the inverter shut down. And sometimes the system is working perfectly and the fault is in the meter or the monitoring, which still matters if your feed-in tariff payments depend on the meter reading.
What the first visit involves
An engineer comes to the property, talks through what you’ve noticed, and tests the system in the order above. That’s usually enough to find the cause. We explain what we’ve found in plain terms and give you a clear written quote before any work starts. Some faults can be put right during that visit; where a part is needed, we’ll talk you through the options first.
If a part needs replacing
If an inverter, isolator, optimiser or panel has failed, we’ll tell you whether it’s worth repairing or replacing, and why. Where the original part is no longer made, we’ll find a compatible alternative and explain any knock-on effects — for example, whether your Distribution Network Operator needs to be told about the change. We install our own systems too, so we know how these systems fail and which replacement parts last.
Why L&R Renewables
Any installer’s system
Your original installer has gone bust, stopped answering, or you don’t know who fitted it? It doesn’t matter. We work on systems of any make and any age.
Certified, in-house engineers
We’re MCS and NAPIT registered and TrustMark approved, and all our work is carried out by our own engineers. We don’t subcontract.
Repair first
We’d rather fix what you have than sell you something new, and we only recommend replacement when repair isn’t the sensible option.
England, Wales & Scotland
Our engineers cover England, Wales and Scotland.
Frequently asked questions
My installer has gone bust. Who can fix my system?
We can. We don’t need the original installer to diagnose or repair a system. If you have the paperwork — the MCS certificate, the inverter model, any handover documents — have it to hand, but don’t worry if you can’t find it.
Do you repair systems you didn’t install?
Yes. We work on systems fitted by any installer, and on all the common panel, inverter and battery brands. We’ll tell you honestly if a part is no longer available and what the alternatives are.
Is it worth repairing an older system?
Usually, yes. Panels generally keep working for many years, and on older systems the fault is most often the inverter or a connection, both of which can be replaced without touching the panels. If you receive feed-in tariff payments, getting the system working again protects that income too. If a repair doesn’t make sense, we’ll say so.
How quickly can you come out?
It depends on where you are and how busy our engineers are that week. When you get in touch, we’ll offer you the earliest visit we can. If a breaker keeps tripping or you can see damage, tell us when you call, and keep the system switched off until we’ve seen it.
Do you cover my area?
Our engineers cover England, Wales and Scotland. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover for your area.
What happens if a panel needs replacing?
We find a panel that’s electrically compatible with the rest of the string and fits the existing mounting system. The exact model is often no longer made, so we match the specifications that matter, fit the new panel, and test the whole string afterwards.
