Common SolarEdge faults
SolarEdge systems have a power optimiser behind each panel, or each pair of panels, as well as the inverter, so a fault can sit in the inverter, an optimiser, the connectors between them or the link to the monitoring. We install solar and battery systems too, so we know how these faults show up.
Isolation faults
SolarEdge reports an isolation fault when the insulation between the panel wiring and earth drops too low, usually because of water in a connector, a damaged cable or a faulty optimiser. SolarEdge notes that it can clear and come back, especially with morning moisture, so a system that’s working by lunchtime still needs testing, string by string, by an engineer.
Optimisers not reporting
If the inverter counts fewer optimisers than you have, or the monitoring shows gaps in the panel layout, one or more optimisers has stopped communicating. It may be a failed optimiser, a loose connector or a pairing problem. Replacing an optimiser means working on the roof, so it needs an engineer and safe access.
Grid faults
SolarEdge inverters check the grid voltage and frequency all the time. If the grid goes down, the inverter reconnects on its own once the supply returns. If the voltage keeps running above the limit, it disconnects to protect itself, and the inverter’s country setting, the AC cabling or the local supply needs checking.
Repair or replace?
We always diagnose first. Many SolarEdge faults turn out to be an optimiser, a connector or a setting rather than the inverter. If the inverter does need replacing, a system with SolarEdge optimisers needs a SolarEdge inverter unless the optimisers are replaced too, and you get a clear written quote before any work starts. SolarEdge error codes and what they mean
SolarEdge shows fault codes as two parts separated by an x, such as 2x19 or 18x86, on the inverter’s screen where it has one and in the monitoring platform. Inverters on older firmware show an error number instead.

3x9E | The inverter is locked, by a user or by a safety function | Switch the inverter off and on again at its ON/OFF switch. If it locks again, call us. |

When to call an engineer
Call us if you see any of these:
- Any isolation fault code, even if it clears later in the day
- Optimisers missing from the monitoring or from the P_OK count
- A grid voltage or frequency code that keeps coming back
- Any code that isn’t in the table, or one that returns after a reset
SolarEdge’s guidance says troubleshooting inside the inverter is for qualified technicians only, after it has been switched off and left five minutes for its capacitors to discharge. Never open the inverter or disconnect its cables yourself.

What does a SolarEdge isolation fault mean?
It means the inverter has measured a drop in insulation between the panel wiring and earth, usually because of water in a connector, a damaged cable or a faulty optimiser. SolarEdge shows it as 2x19, or 18x86 on newer firmware. It can clear as the day goes on and return the next morning, so the system needs testing rather than repeated resets.
Why are some of my SolarEdge optimisers missing from the monitoring?
An optimiser that isn’t reporting has usually failed, lost its connection or needs pairing again, and the panel behind it may be generating less than it should. We find which optimiser or connector is at fault and reconnect or replace it.
Can you replace a SolarEdge inverter with a different brand?
Only if the optimisers are replaced too. SolarEdge optimisers work with SolarEdge inverters, so on most systems the practical choice is a SolarEdge replacement. We check what’s fitted and explain the options before recommending anything.
My installer has gone bust. Can you still help?
Yes. We don’t need the original installer to be involved, and we provide the certification and documentation for any new inverter we fit.
