Solar in London & the South East
West Sussex is switching on new solar and battery projects this year.
In March 2026 West Sussex County Council set out the energy projects due to come online this year, building on a decade in which its Tangmere solar farm (18,300 panels on the former RAF Tangmere site) and its 7.4MW Westhampnett solar farm on a closed landfill near Chichester have brought the council a net income of more than £2 million a year. 2026 brings the 16MW Halewick Lane Energy Park battery site and a new three-year solar PV and battery programme for around 60 council buildings and schools, with eight sites — schools, libraries and fire stations — already scheduled, on top of more than 70 school systems installed to date.
Across London and the South East the picture is similar: a great deal of solar went up early and is now old enough to need attention. Whether you are in Chichester, Croydon or Canterbury, a service picks up tired inverters and failing connections, and inverter repair gets a dead system generating again without replacing the whole array.

Tight roofs, tricky shade
London roofs are small and busy: dormers, chimneys and loft conversions leave room for only a few panels, often partly shaded. That is why many systems here use optimisers or microinverters, which need a different approach to fault finding from a plain string system. Out in the Home Counties and along the south coast, arrays are larger, and sea air becomes the thing to watch.
