Solar in Portsmouth

Portsmouth’s hospitals are adding more solar.

In October 2025 Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust announced £1.7 million of funding from Great British Energy to install extra solar panels at Queen Alexandra Hospital and the Fareham Renal Dialysis Unit. The money comes from a £75 million package announced in September by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and Great British Energy for solar on NHS sites, schools and military sites, and the new panels are expected to be in place by spring 2026. The trust expects them to save it around £200,000 a year, money it says will be reinvested in frontline care.

Portsmouth gets its share of south-coast sunshine, and plenty of its terraced roofs already carry panels from the feed-in tariff era. If yours are ten years old or more, a service checks the inverter, wiring and output before a small fault becomes a dead system, and adding battery storage lets you keep more of what you generate for the evening.

Why L&R

What you get from L&R in Portsmouth.

We know Portsmouth roofs

Portsmouth is the most densely built city in the country outside London, and most of its solar sits on tight Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Southsea, Fratton, North End and Copnor, where roofs are close together and access is planned from the street. The 1930s semis of Drayton and Farlington and the post-war estates of Paulsgrove and Leigh Park are simpler. Being an island city, salt and wind are the everyday problems: they work on isolators and connectors, and gulls nest under arrays. It is also one of the sunniest spots on the south coast, so a healthy system here should be generating well. Many of the systems we’re called to were fitted in the feed-in tariff years and are now on their original inverter.
