Solar in Brighton
Brighton & Hove has put solar on more than 1,400 council homes.
In August 2026 Brighton & Hove City Council reported that a three-year programme to fit solar panels to more than 1,000 council homes across the city had been completed that summer, taking the total number of council homes with solar to more than 1,400. The work concentrated on council-rented houses and bungalows with the lowest energy efficiency ratings, particularly those with electric heating, and on parts of the city with a higher likelihood of fuel poverty. As a social value benefit of the contract, the installer also fitted a solar system at St George’s Hall in Moulsecoomb in July.
Those 1,400 council rooftops sit alongside thousands of privately owned ones, and a seafront roof is a hard place for panels: salt spray, gull droppings and wind-loosened connectors all chip away at output. A regular service and cleaning keep a Brighton system earning, and if your original installer has gone, we repair any make.

Why L&R
What you get from L&R in Brighton.
We know Brighton roofs
Brighton is sunny, south-facing and steep. Much of its solar sits on Victorian and Edwardian terraces stacked up the hills of Hanover, Kemptown and Preston Park, where a lot of roofs are shallow, slated and shared, and access from the street is the first thing to plan. The 1930s semis of Patcham and Hollingbury and the bungalows of Saltdean and Peacehaven are simpler. What the whole coast has in common is salt and gulls: sea air works on connectors and isolators, and herring gulls will nest under an array given the chance. A good number of the city’s conservation-area roofs need a check on what is allowed before anything is ordered. Many of the systems we’re called to were fitted in the feed-in tariff years and are now on their original inverter.

Questions
The things people ask before they ring.
Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.
Do you cover Hove, Portslade, Shoreham and Worthing?
Yes. Our engineers cover Brighton and Hove and the whole Sussex coast from Worthing to Eastbourne, and inland to Lewes, Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.
My Brighton installer has stopped trading. Can you still look after my system?
Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and solar panel servicing.
Can I put solar panels on a house in a Brighton conservation area?
Often, yes, but it depends on the roof. In a conservation area, panels on a slope that faces the street may need consent, and on a listed building any panels need listed building consent. Our engineer looks at the roof and tells you what is likely to be allowed before you commit to anything. See solar panel installations.
