Solar in Sussex
West Sussex is putting solar and batteries on around 60 more council sites.
In March 2026 West Sussex County Council announced a three-year programme to put solar PV and energy storage on approximately 60 corporate buildings and schools, adding to more than 70 solar PV systems already on West Sussex schools, with the next eight sites — schools, libraries and fire stations — already scheduled. A 16MW energy storage system is also due at Halewick Lane, on a former waste site. The projects build on the council’s two solar farms: 18,300 panels on the former RAF Tangmere site, and 26,000 panels with a 4MW battery on a closed landfill at Westhampnett, near Chichester. Cllr Deborah Urquhart, Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Change, said: “I am delighted to see these new projects come to fruition.”
Schools and fire stations are now doing what plenty of Sussex households did years ago: panels on the roof, and a battery to go with them. On the coast, salt and gulls dull the glass; inland, Wealden trees drop leaves and moss onto it, so solar panel cleaning is often the first thing to do. If you never had a battery, battery storage can usually be added to the system you already have.

Why L&R
What you get from L&R in Sussex.
We know Sussex roofs
Sussex roofs change every few miles. Along the coast from Bognor Regis and Worthing to Seaford and Eastbourne it is interwar semis and bungalows facing salt spray and gulls. Inland, the Weald has tile-hung cottages, oak-framed houses and Horsham stone roofs, often under tall trees; Chichester, Arundel, Lewes and Rye have historic centres full of listed buildings and conservation areas; and Crawley, Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath have large post-war and newer estates whose roofs usually take panels well. The South Downs National Park runs across both counties, so for homes inside it we check what is allowed before the survey.

Questions
The things people ask before they ring.
Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.
Do you cover both East and West Sussex?
Yes. Our engineers cover West Sussex — Worthing, Shoreham-by-Sea, Littlehampton, Bognor Regis, Chichester, Crawley, Horsham, Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath — and East Sussex, from Brighton and Hove, Lewes and Seaford to Eastbourne, Hastings, Bexhill-on-Sea, Uckfield and Crowborough. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.
Will you repair a system in Sussex that another company installed?
Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and inverter repair.
Can I have solar panels in the South Downs National Park or a Sussex conservation area?
Often, yes, but it depends on the roof and where the house sits. In a conservation area, panels on a roof slope that faces the street can need planning permission, a listed building needs listed building consent, and inside the South Downs National Park the national park authority is the planning authority, so we check before the survey and tell you where you stand. Where the house roof won’t work, an outbuilding or a ground-mounted array often will. See solar panel installations.
