Solar in Surrey

Surrey Sports Park in Guildford has switched on more than 1,500 solar panels.

In August 2025 Surrey Sports Park in Guildford, one of the University of Surrey’s biggest energy users, switched on a rooftop array of more than 1,500 panels on one of the town’s largest roofs. It is forecast to generate about 728 MWh a year and, the university says, could supply up to 30 per cent of the centre’s electricity, helping to power pool heating, ventilation and cooling. It is the first large-scale project the university has delivered with SSE Energy Solutions towards its target of net zero by 2030, and solar canopies are also being explored for its main car parks. Head of Sustainability Martin Wiles said: “It makes sound financial sense as well as climate sense – the energy you don’t use, you don’t pay for.”

The same sums work on a Surrey house: every unit your panels make and you use at home is one you don’t buy. The catch is timing, because panels peak at midday and most homes use their power in the evening, which is where battery storage comes in. If your array is ten years old or more, a service first shows what it is really generating.

Why L&R

What you get from L&R in Surrey.

We know Surrey roofs

Surrey is England’s most wooded county, and that shapes solar here more than anything else. Tall oaks and pines around Woking, Camberley and the Surrey Hills throw long shadows in winter, so panel layout and shade matter, and leaves and moss collect in gutters and under arrays. The housing is just as varied: Victorian and Edwardian villas in Guildford, Reigate and Dorking, tile-hung cottages in the villages, interwar semis in the Thames towns and large detached houses in Weybridge, Cobham and Esher. Much of the county is green belt and many old town centres have conservation areas, so we check what is allowed before the survey.

Questions

The things people ask before they ring.

Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.

Do you cover Guildford, Woking, Epsom and Reigate?

Yes. Our engineers cover the whole of Surrey — Guildford, Woking, Godalming, Farnham and Camberley in the west, Epsom, Leatherhead, Dorking, Reigate, Redhill and Oxted in the east, and the Thames towns from Weybridge and Walton-on-Thames to Staines-upon-Thames and Egham. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.

Will you repair a system in Surrey that another company installed?

Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and inverter repair.

My Surrey garden has tall trees. Is solar still worth fitting?

Often, yes. Shade only matters if it falls on the panels during the hours they generate most, and we look at that on the survey, including the low winter sun. Where part of a roof is shaded, panel-level optimisers or microinverters stop one shaded panel dragging the rest down, and sometimes a different roof slope or an outbuilding works better. Every install is by our own MCS certified engineers. See solar panel installations.
