Solar in Reading

Reading’s bus depot is getting the town centre’s biggest solar array.

In May 2026 the BBC reported that Reading Community Energy Society is to fit 609 community-owned solar panels to the roof of the Reading Buses depot in Great Knollys Street, a £207,000 scheme run with Reading Borough Council and Reading Buses. Once complete it will be the biggest solar power plant in Reading town centre, generating enough to power about 80 homes; the electricity will supply the depot, with any surplus sold to the National Grid, and local residents can invest as shareholders. The society has already installed community solar at 23 sites across Reading over the past decade, including council buildings and the university.

If you are one of the Reading households in Caversham, Tilehurst or Whitley whose panels went in during the feed-in tariff years, the question now is whether they still produce what they should. A service will tell you, and if you would rather keep your surplus than export it, battery storage is worth a look.

Why L&R

What you get from L&R in Reading.

We know Reading roofs

Reading’s solar sits on the Victorian and Edwardian terraces of east Reading and Caversham, the 1930s semis of Tilehurst and Southcote, the post-war estates at Whitley and Southcote, and the big 1980s and 90s developments at Lower Earley, Woodley and Calcot, which are some of the largest private estates in Europe and full of well-oriented modern roofs. The Thames Valley is inland, mild and fairly dry, so it is kind to solar; what we find most is dust off the M4 and the town’s many trees shading lower rows. Many of the systems we’re called to were fitted in the feed-in tariff years and are now on their original inverter.

My Reading installer has stopped trading. Can you still look after my system?

Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and inverter repair.

Can you add a battery to the solar panels I already have?
