Solar in Oxford
New council homes off Cowley Road share the solar on their roof.
In February 2026 Oxford City Council announced the opening of 12 new social rent homes in Princes Street, off Cowley Road, developed by its wholly owned company OX Place and built by LIFE Build beside the newly redeveloped East Oxford Community Centre. The three-storey block of one- and two-bedroom flats pairs excellent insulation and air tightness with all-electric heating from air source heat pumps, and the council says the scheme exceeded building regulations standards by 88%. Rooftop solar panels supply renewable electricity directly to individual flats, so residents can use a share of it during the day. Councillor Linda Smith, Cabinet Member for Housing, said the homes were “not only genuinely affordable but, like the brand new community centre next door, low carbon too.”
Most Oxford homes will never have panels designed in from day one, but the idea of using your own electricity while the sun is up works on any roof in Cowley, Headington or Summertown. If you already have panels, a service shows whether they are still producing what they should, and battery storage lets you keep the daytime surplus for the evening.

Why L&R
What you get from L&R in Oxford.
We know Oxford roofs
Oxford mixes some of the most protected roofs in England with some of the most ordinary. Much of the centre, Jericho and North Oxford lies inside conservation areas, so the Victorian brick-and-slate terraces of Jericho, the gothic villas further north and anything close to college stone need checking before a single bracket goes on. In Headington, Marston and Cowley it is 1930s semis with hipped tile roofs that take fewer panels than people expect, and in Barton, Rose Hill and Blackbird Leys, post-war estate housing. Mature trees shade many Oxford roofs, so string design matters as much as panel count; out in the county, Cotswold stone and stone-slate roofs around Witney and Burford need the right fixings.

The things people ask before they ring.
Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.
Do you cover Abingdon, Bicester, Witney and Banbury?
Yes. Our engineers cover Oxford and the whole of Oxfordshire, from Kidlington, Bicester and Banbury in the north to Abingdon, Didcot, Wallingford and Thame in the south and east, and Witney, Woodstock and Eynsham to the west. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.
Will you repair a system in Oxford that another company installed?
Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and inverter repair.
Can I have solar panels on a house in one of Oxford’s conservation areas?
Often, yes, but it depends on the roof and whether the building is listed. Much of central Oxford, Jericho and North Oxford is covered by conservation areas, where panels on a roof slope that faces the street can need planning permission, and a listed building needs listed building consent. We check this before the survey and tell you where you stand, and every install is by our own MCS certified engineers. See solar panel installations.
