Solar in Wales

Wales is putting solar on school roofs with Great British Energy money.

In March 2026 the Welsh Government confirmed that two Newport primary schools, Glan Llyn Primary School and Jubilee Park Primary School, had received solar panels under the £9 million of Great British Energy funding for decarbonising public buildings in Wales, administered by Salix Finance through the Wales Funding Programme. Glan Llyn has also received funding for battery storage from the Welsh Government’s Ynni Cymru fund. The panels at Jubilee Park are expected to deliver carbon savings of around 10 tonnes CO2e a year, while the larger system at Glan Llyn should cut the school’s carbon footprint by around 71 tonnes CO2e a year.

Panels on a school roof are sized and looked after by a facilities team; the ones on a semi in Newport, Swansea or Wrexham usually are not. Our engineers cover the whole of Wales for a service or inverter repair, and we work on systems from any installer, including ones that have long since stopped trading.

Our work

Why L&R

Why homeowners in Wales use L&R.

Slate, rain and hillsides

Most Welsh solar is fixed to slate, from Valleys terraces to farmhouses, and slate needs the right fixings and careful handling. Wales is one of the wettest parts of Britain, so moss, lichen and water getting into connectors and isolators are the usual suspects. Hillside and coastal homes are exposed to the wind, and many rural systems have been left unchecked since the day they were fitted.

Any installer’s system

We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading.

Questions

Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.

Do you cover my area?

Our engineers cover England, Wales and southern Scotland. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover for your area.

The company that fitted my panels in Wales has gone. Who can look after them?

We can. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading. See solar panel repair and solar panel servicing.

Can I add a battery to my existing solar panels?

Yes. We add battery storage to existing systems, including systems fitted by other installers. See battery storage.

Are there grants for solar panels in Wales?

Not for most homeowners. The Welsh Government’s Nest scheme can fund solar for eligible lower-income households, ECO4 runs to the end of 2026, and VAT on solar and battery installations is 0% until March 2027. The Warm Homes: Local Grant is England only. See our guide to solar panel grants in Wales.
