Solar in Cardiff

Cardiff is fitting solar and batteries to six of its leisure centres.

In November 2025 Cardiff Council announced a £1.65 million project to fit rooftop solar panels, battery storage and smart energy systems at eight of its buildings — Maindy, Fairwater, Eastern, Western, Llanishen and Pentwyn leisure centres, Penylan Library and Community Centre and the STAR Hub — funded through Welsh Government Ynni Cymru grants and Salix finance. The panels were due to be finished shortly after the announcement, with the batteries and smart systems switched on in early 2026. The council expects the scheme to cut electricity-related carbon emissions at the sites by around 35%, saving an estimated 146 tonnes of CO2e a year.

Pairing panels with a battery is exactly what more Cardiff households are doing too, so that daytime generation covers the evening. If your array is already up, battery storage can usually be added to it; if the system has developed a fault first, solar panel repair gets it generating again before you spend anything on upgrades.

Why L&R

What you get from L&R in Cardiff.

We know Cardiff roofs

Cardiff’s solar sits on the Victorian and Edwardian terraces of Roath, Cathays and Canton, the 1930s semis of Whitchurch, Rhiwbina and Llanishen, the post-war estates at Ely and Llanrumney, and the newer homes at Pontprennau and St Mellons. It is one of the wetter capital cities, with the rain coming in off the Bristol Channel, so moss along the lower edge of panels and damp in roof-top isolators are a normal part of looking after a system here, and the bay throws salt at south-facing roofs. Many of the systems we’re called to were fitted in the feed-in tariff years and are now on their original inverter.

Questions

The things people ask before they ring.

Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.

Do you cover Penarth, Barry, Caerphilly and Newport?

Yes. Our engineers cover the whole of Cardiff, the Vale of Glamorgan and the valleys, and across to Newport and Bridgend. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.

My Cardiff installer has stopped trading. Can you still look after my system?

Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and inverter repair.

Is solar worth it in Cardiff’s weather?

Yes. Panels generate from daylight, not heat, and a well-placed array in Cardiff produces a worthwhile share of a home’s electricity over the year. What matters more is the roof: its direction, its pitch and what shades it. A battery lets you use more of what you generate rather than exporting it. An engineer surveys the roof and your usage before we recommend anything. See solar panel installations and battery storage.
