Solar in Newport

Newport is funding solar on its businesses and community buildings.

In September 2026 Newport City Council reopened its Net Zero Newport Decarbonisation Programme, which over the previous two years had provided advice and more than £700,000 in grants to 30 organisations across the city, including the Coach and Horses pub, which used its funding to put solar panels on its roof. Fresh money from the UK Government’s Local Growth Fund means the programme can now support more small businesses, community groups and charities inside the Newport City Council boundary with energy-efficiency and carbon-reduction projects; households and private landlords are not eligible.

That last point matters if you own a home in Newport with panels already on the roof: nobody is going to grant-fund their upkeep, so keeping the system earning is down to you. A service checks what the array is producing against what it should be, and if the inverter has failed or is throwing error codes, inverter repair is usually the quickest fix.

Why L&R

What you get from L&R in Newport.

We know Newport roofs

Newport’s solar sits on the Victorian terraces of Maindee, Pill and Baneswell, the 1930s semis along Allt-yr-yn and Ridgeway, the post-war estates at Bettws, Ringland and the Gaer, and the newer homes at Glan Llyn, Duffryn and Rogerstone. The city sits on the Severn Estuary with the Usk running through it, so it is wet, and south-facing roofs near the Levels get salt on the wind. Moss along the lower edge of panels and damp in roof-top isolators are a normal part of looking after a system here. Many of the systems we’re called to were fitted in the feed-in tariff years and are now on their original inverter.

Questions

The things people ask before they ring.

Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.

Do you cover Cwmbran, Caerleon, Chepstow and the valleys?

Yes. Our engineers cover the whole of Newport and Gwent, from Cwmbran and Pontypool up to Abergavenny and the Gwent valleys, and along the estuary to Chepstow and Caldicot. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.

My Newport installer has stopped trading. Can you still look after my system?

Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and inverter repair.

Is solar worth it in Newport’s weather?

Yes. Panels generate from daylight, not heat, and a well-placed array in Newport produces a worthwhile share of a home’s electricity over the year. What matters more is the roof: its direction, its pitch and what shades it. A battery lets you use more of what you generate rather than exporting it. An engineer surveys the roof and your usage before we recommend anything. See solar panel installations and battery storage.
