Solar in Bristol
Bristol’s most famous church is going solar.
In June 2026 Bristol24/7 reported that St Mary Redcliffe, the listed church whose 84-metre spire is the second-tallest structure in Bristol, is raising money to put 140 solar panels on its roof. The project is expected to cut the building’s energy use by more than half, and will be followed by air source heat pumps so the church can phase out gas altogether. The new vicar, the Reverend Dr Brutus Green, launched the appeal by climbing the spire and abseiling down — the first vicar to do so since 1872 — with the Diocese of Bristol having declared a climate emergency back in 2019.
Plenty of roofs in Redcliffe, Bedminster, Totterdown and Southville already carry panels, and many of them are now ten years old or more. If yours has gone quiet, an inverter repair is often all it needs; if it still works but you would like to keep more of what it makes, battery storage is the natural next step.

Why L&R
What you get from L&R in Bristol.
We know Bristol roofs
Bristol is hilly, and its solar sits on the Victorian terraces of Bishopston, Easton and Southville, the Georgian and Victorian villas of Clifton and Redland, the 1930s semis of Henleaze, Horfield and Brislington, and the post-war estates at Hartcliffe and Southmead. On the steeper streets two identical systems can face different ways and see different amounts of sun, so which slope gets the panels matters. Much of Clifton and the city centre is a conservation area, so what is allowed on a street-facing roof has to be checked before anything is ordered. The Severn estuary brings wet westerlies, so moss and damp in roof-top isolators are a normal part of looking after panels here. Many of the systems we’re called to were fitted in the feed-in tariff years and are now on their original inverter.

Questions
The things people ask before they ring.
Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.
Do you cover Clifton, Fishponds, Kingswood and Portishead?
Yes. Our engineers cover the whole of Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset, and across to Bath. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.
My Bristol installer has stopped trading. Can you still look after my system?
Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and solar panel servicing.
Can I put solar panels on a house in a Bristol conservation area?
Often, yes, but it depends on the roof. In a conservation area, panels on a slope that faces the street may need consent, and on a listed building any panels need listed building consent. Our engineer looks at the roof and tells you what is likely to be allowed before you commit to anything. See solar panel installations.
