Solar in Gloucestershire
Gloucestershire is putting solar panels on its primary schools.
In February 2025 Gloucestershire County Council named the next six primary schools in its solar programme for maintained schools, after a successful pilot: schools in Brockworth, Churchend, Cheltenham, Northleach, Soudley and Tredworth in Gloucester. The pilot covered schools in Nailsworth, Tuffley, Cheltenham, Tewkesbury, Stow-on-the-Wold and Lydney. Cabinet was recommended in July 2024 to release up to £2 million for the programme, which runs from March 2025 to March 2027, and the council expects 85 of its 100 maintained schools to be suitable. The panels are expected to last over 20 years, subject to maintenance. Council leader Cllr Stephen Davies said: “Solar panels offer significant energy savings for schools and provide an opportunity for pupils to learn about renewable energy.”
“Subject to maintenance” applies to a house roof in Cheltenham or Stroud just as much as to a school. Many Gloucestershire homes had panels fitted in the feed-in tariff years, and those systems are now at the age where inverters start to fail. A service shows what yours is really producing, and if generation has dropped, solar panel repair finds out why and puts it right.

Why L&R
What you get from L&R in Gloucestershire.
We know Gloucestershire roofs
Gloucestershire has some of the most varied roofs in the country. In the Cotswolds, from Cirencester to Chipping Campden, houses are built of honey-coloured limestone, and many still carry stone-slate roofs that are heavy, uneven and need careful fixing. Cheltenham is a Regency town of stuccoed terraces and villas, often with shallow roofs hidden behind parapets. Stroud, Nailsworth and Dursley have mill-workers’ cottages stacked up steep valley sides, and in the Forest of Dean, around Cinderford, Coleford and Lydney, there are stone miners’ cottages and plenty of rain. Around Gloucester and Tewkesbury the Severn floods, so where an inverter goes matters, and on Cotswold farms a barn often suits panels better than the house.

Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.
Do you cover Cheltenham, Stroud, Cirencester and the Forest of Dean?
Yes. Our engineers cover the whole of Gloucestershire — Gloucester, Cheltenham and Tewkesbury in the Severn Vale, Stroud, Nailsworth and Dursley in the valleys, Cirencester, Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold, Moreton-in-Marsh and Chipping Campden in the Cotswolds, and Cinderford, Coleford and Lydney in the Forest of Dean. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.
Will you repair a system in Gloucestershire that another company installed?
Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and inverter repair.
Can I have solar panels on a Cotswold stone house or in a conservation area?
Often, yes, but it depends on the building. A listed building needs listed building consent, and many Cotswold towns and villages are conservation areas, where panels on a roof slope that faces the street can need planning permission; being in the Cotswolds National Landscape can add to that. Stone-slate roofs also need a careful fixing method. We check before the survey and tell you where you stand. Where the house roof won’t work, a barn, an outbuilding or a ground-mounted array often will. See solar panel installations.
