Solar in Scotland

Scottish Water is running a Borders treatment works on solar.

In January 2026 Scottish Water announced that 450 solar panels mounted on the tank tops at Roberton Water Treatment Works near Hawick in the Scottish Borders are now generating around 0.21 GWh of electricity a year, meeting a quarter of the site’s energy demand, with 65 per cent used on site and the surplus exported to the grid. The £371,000 scheme, led by Scottish Water Horizons, is expected to cut carbon emissions by 43 tonnes a year over a life of more than 30 years, and follows solar at Selkirk and hydro at Whiteadder reservoir as the area’s third retrofit renewable project in 18 months.

Retrofitting older infrastructure is the point: nobody knocked the works down to go solar. The same holds for a home in Hawick, Dumfries, Ayr or Edinburgh with panels from the feed-in tariff years. If the inverter has failed, inverter repair brings the system back, and adding battery storage lets you keep more of what the roof already makes.

Our work

Real jobs by our own engineers.

Photos from L&R jobs, each labelled with the place and year.

Why L&R

Why homeowners in Scotland choose L&R.

Long summer days, hard winters

Scottish systems do most of their work in the long summer days, so a fault left over the summer costs more here than anywhere. Winter brings snow, ice and high winds, which test roof fixings, cabling and isolators, especially on exposed and coastal homes. Slate roofs are the norm, and many new-build homes have a small developer-fitted array that nobody has looked at since handover.
