Solar in the North East
North Tyneside’s Killingworth depot solar has passed a million units.
In September 2026 North Tyneside Council reported that the solar panels at its Killingworth depot have now generated more than 1 million kWh of clean electricity, saving the council over £300,000 that has been reinvested into local services. Councillor Willie Samuel, cabinet member for environmental sustainability, said the panels are “delivering real benefits for our residents” and that generating more of the council’s own power protects its budgets from rising utility prices. The installation is part of the council’s wider programme to improve energy efficiency and cut carbon emissions across its buildings.
The same logic applies to a house in Whitley Bay, Wallsend, Durham or Sunderland: a solar array only pays its way while it is actually generating. If the panels have been up for years without a check, a service confirms they are still earning their keep, and if the system has gone quiet, solar panel repair gets it back on.
