Solar in Northumberland

Acomb villagers have planning permission for their own solar farm.

In June 2026 Acomb Community Energy, a not-for-profit Community Benefit Society formed by local residents, was granted planning permission by Northumberland County Council for a ground-mounted solar array. It will be built in a 4-acre field on the edge of the village with the support of the landowner and tenant farmer, and is expected to generate around 829,000 kilowatt hours of clean electricity a year, enough for around 300 homes. The group has secured £60,000 of funding so far, with support from Northern Powergrid, Northumberland County Council, the Barbour Foundation and the National Lottery Community Fund among others. Volunteer director Guy Nicholson said: “Securing planning permission is a major step for the project and gives us a clear route into the next phase of work.”

Acomb is just north of Hexham, and the same idea works at house scale right across rural Northumberland, where plenty of stone-built farmhouses and cottages are off the gas grid. We survey and fit new solar panel installations across the county, on a roof, an outbuilding or the ground, and if your panels went up in the feed-in tariff years, a service shows what they are really producing.

Why L&R

What you get from L&R in Northumberland.

We know Northumberland roofs

Northumberland is two counties for solar. In the south-east it is colliery terraces in Ashington, Bedlington and Blyth, with long shared rooflines and chimney stacks to work around, and the 1960s and 1970s estates of Cramlington. North and west it is sandstone farmhouses, cottages and old bastle houses under stone or Welsh slate, where the hooks and flashings have to suit the roof, in towns and villages from Hexham and Alnwick to the Cheviot valleys. Wind and salt off the North Sea work on frames, fixings and isolators along the coast, snow and driving rain test systems up the Tyne and Coquet valleys, and long summer days this far north help make up for grey winters.

Questions

The things people ask before they ring.

Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.

Do you cover Hexham, Alnwick, Berwick and the south-east of the county?

Yes. Our engineers cover the whole of Northumberland — Cramlington, Blyth, Bedlington, Ashington and Morpeth in the south-east, Ponteland, Prudhoe, Corbridge, Hexham and Haltwhistle in the Tyne valley, and Amble, Alnwick, Seahouses, Wooler and Berwick-upon-Tweed in the north. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.

Will you repair a system in Northumberland that another company installed?

Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading or no longer travel this far north, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and inverter repair.

Can I have solar panels in the National Park or on the Northumberland coast?

Usually, yes, but the rules can be tighter. Inside the Northumberland National Park and the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and in conservation areas such as the historic centres of Alnwick, Hexham and Berwick, panels on a street-facing roof slope or a wall can need planning permission, and a listed building needs consent. We check before the survey and tell you where you stand. Where the house roof won’t work, an outbuilding or a ground-mounted array often will. See solar panel installations.
