Solar in Carlisle
Cumberland Council is rolling solar out across its leisure centres.
In May 2025 Cumberland Council announced the completion of a 160 kW rooftop solar system at Workington Leisure Centre, the first in a rollout across its sports centres, paid for through Sport England’s Swimming Pool Support Fund and fitted by Penrith-based Love Solar. The panels are expected to cover around a fifth of the centre’s electricity, with the surplus exported to the grid, and the council confirmed that The Sands Centre in Carlisle is next in line, with £73,000 of Sport England funding for energy-efficiency upgrades. Councillor Anne Quilter said the work “contributes directly to our Carbon and Energy Management Plan.”
A fifth of a leisure centre’s electricity is a serious amount of power, and a domestic array on a semi in Stanwix or Harraby does the same job in proportion, provided it is still working. Carlisle roofs collect moss and grime in the wet, so cleaning is often the quickest win, and if the inverter has failed after a decade of Cumbrian winters, inverter repair gets the system generating again.

Why L&R
What you get from L&R in Carlisle.
We know Carlisle roofs
Carlisle’s solar sits on red sandstone terraces in Denton Holme and Currock, the 1930s semis of Stanwix and Belle Vue, the post-war estates of Harraby and Morton, and a great many farmhouses and barns in the villages around the city. It is one of the wettest cities in England: moss, lichen and a film of grime cut output faster than in the south, and the 2015 floods left plenty of ground-floor inverters and consumer units needing a proper check. Being a long way from most installers also means that a lot of the systems fitted here in the feed-in tariff years have never been serviced, and their single string inverters are now ageing.
