Solar in Preston

Preston Town Hall is getting a much bigger solar array.

In February 2026 Preston City Council announced a major upgrade of the rooftop solar system on Preston Town Hall. The original array is being replaced with 134 new high-efficiency panels, a 60.3 kWp installation the council describes as 15 to 20 times the size of a typical home set-up, expected to produce almost twice as much electricity as before and cut around 9.1 tonnes of carbon a year. Installation was scheduled for late April 2026 by a Bamber Bridge-based contractor, and the existing panels are being donated to Community Energy Preston rather than scrapped.

The Town Hall story is really about age: the original panels still worked, but a newer array does far more with the same roof. If your own system in Fulwood, Ashton or Ingol went up a decade or more ago, a service will show whether it is still earning its keep, and if the honest answer is no, a new system may be the better call.

Why L&R

What you get from L&R in Preston.

We know Preston roofs

Preston’s older streets are brick and stone terraces with slate roofs around Ashton, Plungington and Fishwick, with 1930s semis across Fulwood and Penwortham and new estates going up on the north-west edge of the city around Cottam. Lancashire is one of the wetter parts of England, and Preston sits on the Ribble with the Pennine foothills at Longridge Fell to the east, so moss, damp and water in roof-top isolators are a normal part of looking after panels here. Many of the systems we’re called to were fitted in the feed-in tariff years and are now on their original inverter.

Questions

The things people ask before they ring.

Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.

Do you cover Fulwood, Penwortham, Leyland and Longridge?

Yes. Our engineers cover the whole of Preston and South Ribble, and the rest of Lancashire from Chorley and Blackburn to Blackpool, Lancaster and Southport. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.

My Preston installer has gone bust. Can you still repair my system?

Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and inverter repair.

Are solar batteries worth it?

For some homes, yes; for others, not yet. It comes down to how much your panels generate, how much of that you already use during the day, and your tariff. A battery helps most where a lot of generation is being exported for little return. Our engineer looks at your generation and usage before recommending anything. See battery storage.
