Solar in Lancashire

Ribble Valley villages are putting council grants into solar.

In March 2026 community groups across the Ribble Valley were encouraged to apply for council grants to develop local energy schemes, and councillors were told a number had already started or been suggested. Examples of new community solar projects include Chipping & District Memorial Hall, offered £23,000 towards equipment, and Hurst Green Football Club, earmarked £35,000, while a Whalley hydro-electric project has come up in other discussions. Parish and town councils were also set for a talk on local energy projects. Asked how the council could help, the council leader, councillor Simon Hore, said: “We have already seen various schemes submitted, particularly for solar panels and battery storage on community buildings.”

The same council plan encourages home-owners, tenants and landlords to use energy from low and zero-carbon sources, and for most Lancashire homes that starts with the roof. If you are weighing it up, see solar panel installations; if you already have panels, battery storage lets you keep more of the daytime output for the evening.

Why L&R

What you get from L&R in Lancashire.

We know Lancashire roofs

Lancashire gives an installer very different roofs within an hour’s drive. On the Fylde coast, guesthouse terraces and seaside bungalows take the wind and salt off the Irish Sea, which works on fixings, frames and isolators. In the east, the mill towns are rows of stone and brick terraces with narrow slate roofs and chimney stacks, and the rain off the Pennines grows moss fast. Preston, Chorley and Leyland are mostly semis and newer estates with simpler roofs, while Lancaster’s Georgian centre and the stone villages of the Ribble Valley and Forest of Bowland often need planning checks first. Plenty of the county’s systems went in during the feed-in tariff years and are now ageing.
