Solar panels in Lancaster — installed, repaired and serviced by one team

In Lancaster and around Morecambe Bay — Bowerham, Scotforth, Skerton and Bailrigg, out to Morecambe, Heysham, Carnforth, Bolton-le-Sands, Silverdale and the Lune valley — our own engineers install solar PV and battery systems, and repair and service systems fitted by any installer. We install our own systems and repair everyone else’s, so we know exactly how they fail.

Solar in Lancaster

Lancaster University’s new solar farm faces east and west — on purpose.

In April 2026 Lancaster University said it was regularly generating 100 per cent of its own electricity for the first time, thanks to a new solar farm. The 11 MW array on Hazelrigg Lane, close to the university’s 2.35 MW wind turbine, began producing energy late last year; it is the UK’s second east-west orientated solar farm, designed to maximise generation at peak morning and evening demand, and includes an agrivoltaics field demonstrator. Together the turbine and solar farm produce enough electricity to power 2,800 homes, and the university has cut its energy-related emissions from 25,900 tonnes CO2e in 2005 to 10,900 tonnes in 2025. Vice-Chancellor Professor Steve Decent said the work was making it “one of the UK’s HE sector’s largest producers of clean energy”.

East and west aren’t only for universities. Plenty of roofs in Lancaster and Morecambe face that way, and panels split across both slopes spread their output into the morning and evening, when a household uses the most. A survey for solar panel installations looks at every slope, and battery storage keeps what the panels make for later.

Why L&R

What you get from L&R in Lancaster.

We know Lancaster roofs

Lancaster’s centre is Georgian sandstone, much of it listed or inside a conservation area, so what is allowed has to be checked before anything goes on a roof. Around it, Victorian terraces in Bowerham, Primrose, Skerton and Scotforth have narrow slate roofs and chimney stacks, while semis in Scale Hall, Torrisholme and Ridge have simpler roofs that take a full array. Morecambe and Heysham face the bay, so salt and wind off the water work on frames, fixings and isolators, and gulls nest under panels. North towards Carnforth and Silverdale, and up the Lune valley, stone cottages and farms sit in exposed spots. Many systems here date from the feed-in tariff years.

Questions

The things people ask before they ring.

Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.

Do you cover Morecambe, Heysham, Carnforth and the Lune valley?

Yes. Our engineers cover Lancaster and the whole district — Morecambe, Bare, Heysham and Overton on the bay, Carnforth, Bolton-le-Sands, Warton and Silverdale to the north, Galgate to the south, and Caton, Halton and the Lune valley villages inland. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.

Will you repair a system in Lancaster that another company installed?

Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and inverter repair.

Can I have solar panels on a listed or conservation-area house in Lancaster?

Often, yes, but it depends on the house and exactly where it sits. Panels on a roof slope that faces the street can need planning permission inside a conservation area, and a listed building needs listed building consent. Parts of Lancaster’s Georgian centre fall into one or both, so we check before the survey and tell you where you stand; a rear slope or an outbuilding is sometimes the better answer. See solar panel installations.
