Solar in Yorkshire
South Yorkshire is putting solar on schools, libraries and community centres.
In July 2025 the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority welcomed Government backing for seven renewable energy projects in Doncaster and Rotherham through the Mayoral Renewables Fund Grant Scheme, including solar panels on three Doncaster schools, the community centres at Scawthorpe and Carcroft, Rotherham Library and Rotherham Outdoor Market. Mayor Oliver Coppard said the scheme was “creating a cleaner, greener and fairer South Yorkshire”. It sits alongside the council rooftop programmes now under way in Sheffield, Leeds and Hull.
Across Yorkshire, from Doncaster and Rotherham up to Bradford, Harrogate and the coast, a great deal of domestic solar went up in the feed-in tariff years and is still running on its original inverter. How quickly can you fix a faulty inverter in Yorkshire?

Can you fit solar panels on a stone slate roof in West Yorkshire?
Yes. The heavy stone slates on older homes around Halifax, Huddersfield and the Pennine towns need the right hooks and careful handling, and the roof is checked before we quote. Snow sits longer on these roofs than in the south, so fixings and cable runs are specified for it. See solar panel installations.
Can you add a battery to my existing solar panels?
Yes. An AC-coupled battery works alongside any make of inverter, so your panels and inverter stay as they are, and the network operator is notified as part of the job. If you’re on the feed-in tariff, we set it up to protect your payments. See battery storage.
