Solar in Bradford

Ilkley’s sports clubs and scout groups have gone solar.

In May 2026 Your Ilkley reported a long and growing list of Ilkley sports clubs and community groups using solar to cut their bills. The latest is Ilkley Lawn Tennis and Squash Club, whose panels were installed in March. Ilkley Cricket Club and Olicanian CC have put panels on their clubhouses in the last 18 months, the rugby club has had solar since 2024 and Ben Rhydding Hockey Club since 2018, and the Ben Rhydding and Wharfedale scouts, both with battery storage, have each halved the energy they buy from the grid. Across the list, around 240,000 kWh a year is expected. The tennis club’s general manager, Gavin Sutcliffe, said: “We wanted to get our solar panels in place for two reasons – environmental and economic.”

What works on a Wharfedale clubhouse works on a house in Ilkley, Shipley or Heaton too: use as much of the daytime output as you can, and keep the rest. Battery storage holds it for the evening, as the scouts have found, and if your panels have been up since the feed-in tariff years, a service shows what they are really producing.

Why L&R

What you get from L&R in Bradford.

We know Bradford roofs

Bradford is a city built of stone. The Victorian terraces of Manningham, Great Horton and Bowling are local sandstone under slate or heavy stone slate, the merchant warehouses of Little Germany and Titus Salt’s model village at Saltaire are conservation areas, and the villas of Heaton sit among mature trees that shade a roof in winter. Out along the Aire and Worth valleys, houses in Bingley, Keighley and Haworth climb hillsides where the best roof slope is rarely the one facing the street, and in Ilkley big Victorian villas look across Wharfedale. Pennine rain and moorland wind keep moss, grime and loose fixings on the list, and plenty of arrays here are still on their first inverter.

Questions

The things people ask before they ring.

Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.

Do you cover Keighley, Ilkley, Bingley and Shipley?

Yes. Our engineers cover Bradford and the whole district, from Shipley, Saltaire, Baildon and Bingley along the Aire valley to Keighley, Silsden and Haworth, out to Ilkley, Burley in Wharfedale and Menston in Wharfedale, and Queensbury, Thornton and Clayton to the west of the city. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.

Will you repair a system in Bradford that another company installed?

Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and inverter repair.

Can I have solar panels on a house in Saltaire or another Bradford conservation area?

Often, yes, but it depends on the roof and whether the building is listed. Bradford Council lists 60 conservation areas in the district, among them Little Germany, Haworth, Ilkley and Saltaire, which is also a World Heritage Site. Panels on a roof slope that faces the street can need planning permission in a conservation area, and a listed building needs listed building consent. We check this before the survey and tell you where you stand. See solar panel installations.
