Solar in Doncaster

Doncaster is putting solar panels on two schools and three council buildings.

Decision papers published in February 2026 show the City of Doncaster Council will use a £276,000 grant from Great British Energy, provided through the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, to fit solar panels at five sites: Hatchell Wood Primary School, The Hayfield School, Central Family Hub, Stainforth Family Hub and Cantley Pavilion. The panels are expected to cut electricity costs across the five buildings. Once installed, at no upfront cost to the schools or tenants, future maintenance falls to the school or the council. Mayor of Doncaster Ros Jones said: “The funding from Great British Energy is fantastic news, enabling us to forge ahead with renewable energy projects on the rooftops of two schools and three community locations in Doncaster.”

Note the line about maintenance: the council has made sure somebody looks after its panels once they are up. Plenty of Doncaster homes, from Bessacarr bungalows to pit-village semis, went solar in the feed-in tariff years and have not been checked since the installer left. A service shows what yours is really generating, and if it has stopped, solar panel repair finds out why.

Why L&R

What you get from L&R in Doncaster.

We know Doncaster roofs

Doncaster is a town ringed by pit villages, and its roofs show it. Rossington, Edlington, Armthorpe, Askern, Carcroft, Stainforth and Moorends grew up around collieries, with long streets of brick terraces and semis whose roofs face whichever way the street happened to run. In town it is Victorian terraces in Hyde Park and Hexthorpe, interwar and post-war semis in Wheatley, Intake and Balby, and larger houses and bungalows in Bessacarr and Cantley. East of the town the land is flat and open across the Humberhead Levels to Hatfield, Thorne and Fishlake, so the wind reaches every fixing, and some low-lying streets have flooded, which matters when deciding where an inverter and battery should go.

Questions

The things people ask before they ring.

Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.

Do you cover Thorne, Rossington, Conisbrough and Rotherham?

Yes. Our engineers cover Doncaster and the whole borough — Balby, Bessacarr, Cantley, Bentley and Armthorpe, out to Hatfield, Thorne and Askern in the north and east, Rossington, Tickhill and Bawtry in the south, and Conisbrough, Edlington and Mexborough in the west — and neighbouring Rotherham. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.

Will you repair a system in Doncaster that another company installed?

Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and inverter repair.

My Doncaster home is in an area that has flooded. Where should the inverter and battery go?

Tell us when you call, and we’ll plan for it on the survey. Inverters, isolators and batteries don’t mix with floodwater, so where a house has flooded before, as parts of Bentley and Fishlake have, we look at where each part would sit and keep it as high as the manufacturer’s installation rules and safety guidance allow. If an existing system has been under water, don’t switch it back on; have it checked first. See solar panel repair.
