Solar in Barnsley
A Penistone firm is charging its forklifts from its own solar panels.
In March 2026 Barnsley Council reported that Argo Feeds, a fifth-generation family business in Penistone, had replaced two diesel forklift trucks with electric ones that recharge from its existing solar PV system. The panels went on its roofs in 2024 and already power more than a third of its milling and business operations; the switch is set to cut its carbon emissions by 11.6 tonnes a year. It was helped by a Low Carbon Grant from the council’s Net Zero Barnsley programme, supported by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, which has worked with more than 250 local businesses and delivered £430,000 of grants. Director Tom Goldthorpe said: “Investing in new green technology and our own energy generation is a big part of our strategy.”
The same sum works at home: the more of your panels’ output you use yourself, whether in a battery, an electric car or the washing machine, the less you buy from the grid. If your Barnsley system went up in the feed-in tariff years, a service shows whether it is still pulling its weight, and battery storage lets you keep the daytime surplus for the evening.

Why L&R
What you get from L&R in Barnsley.
We know Barnsley roofs
Barnsley runs from coalfield to moorland, and its roofs change with it. In the Dearne towns — Goldthorpe, Thurnscoe, Wombwell and Grimethorpe — it is long streets of brick colliery terraces, where the street, not the sun, decided which way the roof faces; east and west slopes still work well when the system is designed for them. The estates around Athersley, Kendray and Lundwood are council-built semis and bungalows, and the newer estates at Dodworth, Darton and Hoyland have simpler, larger roofs. West of the M1 the houses turn to stone: cottages and farmhouses in Penistone, Silkstone and Cawthorne under heavy stone-slate roofs, high on the Pennine edge, where wind, snow and moss on the panels come with the height.

Questions
The things people ask before they ring.
Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.
Do you cover Penistone, Wombwell, Hoyland and Cudworth?
Yes. Our engineers cover the whole of Barnsley — the town, Monk Bretton, Worsbrough, Dodworth and Darton, Royston and Cudworth to the north and east, Wombwell, Hoyland and Elsecar to the south, the Dearne towns of Goldthorpe and Thurnscoe, and Penistone, Silkstone and Cawthorne to the west. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.
Will you repair a system in Barnsley that another company installed?
Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and inverter repair.
Can I have solar panels on a stone house in Penistone or Cawthorne?
Usually, yes. Stone-slate roofs can take panels, but they need the right fixings and flashings rather than the standard tile kit, and we check the roof’s condition on the survey. Penistone and Cawthorne both have conservation areas, where panels on a roof slope or wall facing the street can need planning permission, and a listed building needs listed building consent, so we check before the survey and tell you where you stand. See solar panel installations.
