Solar in Wakefield
Fieldhead Hospital in Wakefield has the go-ahead for 614 rooftop panels.
In September 2026 the Wakefield Express reported that plans for a rooftop solar farm at Fieldhead Hospital had been given the go-ahead, after a council planning officer’s report said prior approval was not required. The application, made to Wakefield Council on behalf of South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, sets out 614 panels across five buildings: the Horizon Centre, Learning and Wellbeing, Newhaven, the Unity Centre and Ryeburn. Fieldhead, nearby Pinderfields Hospital and the Yorkshire Ambulance Service headquarters at Carr Gate were among the first public buildings to receive a share of a £180m investment in solar from Great British Energy, with bill savings to be reinvested in frontline services. Simon Lightwood, MP for Wakefield and Rothwell, has called it “a big step towards a more sustainable and cost-effective NHS.”
Every unit a hospital roof makes and uses on site is one it doesn’t buy, and a house in Sandal or Ossett works the same way. Panels peak at midday while most homes use their power in the evening, so battery storage closes the gap. If an older array has dropped off or stopped altogether, solar panel repair finds out why.

Why L&R
What you get from L&R in Wakefield.
We know Wakefield roofs
Wakefield is a small cathedral city with a ring of former mining towns around it. Near the centre, the Georgian terraces of St John’s are a conservation area with extra planning controls, one of 31 across the district, which also take in Horbury, Ossett and the streets around Pontefract Castle. Sandal, Wrenthorpe and Outwood have plenty of 1930s semis and newer estates with usable roof, while Normanton, Featherstone, Hemsworth, South Elmsall and Castleford have long streets of brick terraces under slate. The east of the district is lower and drier than the Pennine side of West Yorkshire, which suits solar, but homes near the Aire and Calder need thought about where the inverter and battery go.
