Solar panels in York — installs, repairs and servicing from one team

In York and the villages around it — Acomb, Clifton, Heworth, Fulford, Haxby, Strensall and Copmanthorpe — our own engineers install solar PV and battery systems, and repair and service systems fitted by any installer. We install our own systems and repair everyone else’s, so we know exactly how they fail.

Solar in York

York’s community buildings are getting solar through the Mayoral Renewables Fund.

In July 2025 the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority confirmed £700,000 from the Mayoral Renewables Fund to fit solar panels to community facilities, with four York sites on the list: Yearsley Swimming Pool, Athena House, Joseph Rowntree School and Acomb Explore. Whitby Leisure Centre, the Jack Laugher Centre in Ripon and Thirsk and Sowerby Leisure Centre are among the North Yorkshire sites, and the combined authority estimates around £4 million of savings across the lifetime of the technology as part of its aim to make the region carbon negative by 2040.

Panels on Yearsley pool and panels on a terrace in Holgate share the same weak point: kit that nobody looks at until the bills creep up. If your system has never had a check, book a service; if it has already gone dark, solar panel repair covers any installer’s system, including ones whose original fitter has long since disappeared.

Why L&R

What you get from L&R in York.

We know York roofs

York is flat. The Vale of York gives most roofs a clear sky, so shading here comes from trees and neighbouring buildings rather than hills. The city’s solar sits on the Victorian terraces of South Bank and The Groves, the 1930s semis of Acomb and Clifton, and the newer estates at Huntington, Haxby and Derwenthorpe. The city centre and many of the villages are conservation areas, where panels have to be placed with care and sometimes need consent from City of York Council — we’ll tell you what’s possible on your roof before you commit to anything. Low ground near the Ouse and the Foss can be damp, which is hard on isolators. Many systems here went in during the feed-in tariff years and are on their original inverter.

Questions

The things people ask before they ring.

Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.

Do you cover Acomb, Haxby, Fulford and the villages around York?

Yes. Our engineers cover the whole of York and the YO postcode area, from Selby and Tadcaster to Pocklington, Malton and Easingwold. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.

My York installer has stopped trading. Can you still service my system?

Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel servicing and solar panel repair.

Can a solar battery be installed outside?

Some can. Certain models are rated for outdoor use and can go on an external wall or in a garage; others must be indoors, out of the weather. Plenty of York terraces have no garage and little loft space, so where the battery will live is one of the first things our engineer looks at on the survey. See battery storage.
