Solar in North Yorkshire
Scarborough Hospital is going solar and swapping steam for a heat pump.
In May 2026 York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust launched an £8.7 million green energy upgrade at Scarborough Hospital, funded through phase 4 of the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme. Working with Vital Energi, the trust is installing a 1MW heat pump system and replacing the hospital’s aged steam heating, in a project that aims to cut the site’s carbon footprint by nearly 1,200 tonnes a year. Alongside it, 1,085 solar panels funded through Great British Energy are going on roofs across the hospital estate, generating more than 80 tonnes of carbon savings a year; North Yorkshire Council approved them in February. John Runniff, account development director at Vital Energi, said the project “will have a major impact on Scarborough General Hospital’s carbon footprint and energy resilience.”
Make more of your own electricity, then take gas out of the heating: it is the same plan plenty of North Yorkshire households are following, and it only pays if the panels are working. If yours went up in the feed-in tariff years, a service shows what they are really generating, and battery storage lets you keep more of that output for the evening.

Why L&R
What you get from L&R in North Yorkshire.
We know North Yorkshire roofs
North Yorkshire is England’s largest county, and its roofs run from coast to fell. In Scarborough, Filey and Whitby, salt spray and gulls dull panels and work at fixings faster than inland. In the Dales around Skipton, Settle, Grassington and Richmond it is gritstone and limestone houses under heavy stone-slate roofs; in Ryedale, on the edge of the North York Moors, red pantiles in Malton, Pickering and Helmsley. The Vale of York towns — Thirsk, Northallerton, Easingwold and Selby — have brick terraces and post-war estates that take panels easily, and on the county’s farms a barn roof or a ground-mounted array is often the better answer. Two national parks and many conservation areas mean checking before anything goes up.

The things people ask before they ring.
Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.
Do you cover Skipton, Scarborough, Whitby and Selby?
Yes. Our engineers cover the whole county — Harrogate, Knaresborough and Ripon, Skipton, Settle and the Dales, Northallerton, Richmond, Bedale and Thirsk, Selby and Tadcaster, Malton and Pickering, and the coast from Filey and Scarborough to Whitby — as well as York. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.
Will you repair a system in North Yorkshire that another company installed?
Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading or no longer travel this far, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and inverter repair.
Can I have solar panels in the Yorkshire Dales or the North York Moors?
Often, yes, but it depends on the building and where it sits. Inside a national park or a conservation area, panels on a wall or roof slope facing the road can need planning permission, a listed building needs listed building consent, and the national park authority is the planning authority inside each park, so we check before the survey and tell you where you stand. Where the house roof won’t work, an outbuilding or a ground-mounted array often will. See solar panel installations.
