Solar in Harrogate
The Great Yorkshire Showground now makes more than half its own electricity.
In June 2026 the Yorkshire Agricultural Society said it had switched on 1,536 new solar panels at the Great Yorkshire Showground in Harrogate, fitted to the roofs of the Great Yorkshire Events Centre and the showground’s sheep sheds. The farming charity already had 1,940 panels on the site, generating 44 per cent of its electricity; with the new array it now generates more than half, and the extra panels are estimated to save 190 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year. The investment supports every business on the showground, from the Events Centre and the Pavilions of Harrogate to Fodder and Harrogate Caravan Park. Chief executive Allister Nixon said the investment “represents a massive step forward in the Yorkshire Agricultural Society’s sustainability journey”.
A showground has acres of roof to work with; a Harrogate house usually has one or two slopes of Victorian slate, so every panel has to earn its place. If yours went up a decade or more ago, a service checks the panels, fixings and inverter, and if generation has dropped or stopped altogether, inverter repair is usually the fix.

Why L&R
What you get from L&R in Harrogate.
We know Harrogate roofs
Harrogate was built as a spa town, and most of its roofs are Victorian and Edwardian: stone villas under Welsh slate around the Stray, the Duchy and Valley Gardens, and terraces in Bilton and Starbeck. Slate takes panels well with the right hooks and flashings, but old slates crack if a roof is walked carelessly, and the large conservation area over the Victorian centre means checking what is allowed first. Newer estates at Jennyfields, Pannal and Killinghall have simpler tiled roofs that take panels easily. Out of town, Knaresborough’s stone houses climb the Nidd gorge, and up Nidderdale towards Pateley Bridge the farmhouses sit high and exposed, where a barn roof is often the better place for panels.

Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.
Do you cover Knaresborough, Ripon, Pateley Bridge and Wetherby?
Yes. Our engineers cover Harrogate and the villages around it — Killinghall, Pannal, Follifoot and Hampsthwaite — plus Knaresborough, Ripon and Masham, Pateley Bridge and the rest of Nidderdale, Boroughbridge, and Wetherby just over the boundary. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.
Will you repair a system in Harrogate that another company installed?
Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and inverter repair.
Can I have solar panels on a Victorian house in Harrogate’s conservation area?
Often, yes, but it depends on the roof and whether the building is listed. The Harrogate conservation area covers the Victorian centre of the town, and parts of Harrogate also have Article 4 directions that remove some permitted development rights, so panels can need planning permission, and a listed building needs listed building consent. We check this before the survey and tell you where you stand. See solar panel installations.
