Solar in Blackburn

Darwen’s newest homes come with solar panels and heat pumps.

In July 2025 the first home was occupied on a new development of 11 homes in Salisbury Road, Darwen, a stone’s throw from Sunnyhurst Wood, with three more properties already under offer. The mix of detached and semi-detached houses is the second site in Darwen brought forward by Lang Estates, and it stands on a brownfield site previously owned by Blackburn with Darwen Council, where Greenways Home for the Elderly once stood. The council’s Local Plan commits to a brownfield-first approach to new homes in the borough. Councillor Quesir Mahmood, the council’s deputy leader, said: “Importantly, the houses are all energy efficient too – with solar panels and heat pumps, ensuring they are sustainable and cost-effective to run.”

New homes like these get solar from day one. Most of the panels on Blackburn and Darwen’s terraces and semis went up in the feed-in tariff years, and those systems are now ageing. If generation has dropped or the inverter has gone quiet, solar panel repair covers any installer’s system; to add panels to a home that has none, see solar panel installations.

Why L&R

What you get from L&R in Blackburn.

We know Blackburn roofs

Blackburn and Darwen grew on cotton, and it shows on the roofs. Rows of brick and stone terraces climb the hillsides around the old mills in Mill Hill, Audley, Bastwell and Ewood and up through Darwen, with narrow slate roofs, chimney stacks and rear offshoots, so shading has to be planned in. Inter-war and post-war semis in Beardwood, Wilpshire, Livesey and Feniscowles have larger, simpler roofs that take a full array. Out in the Ribble Valley, stone cottages in Clitheroe and Whalley can sit in conservation areas that need checking first, and on the edge of the West Pennine Moors the rain and wind test fixings and isolators and grow moss on panels.

Questions

The things people ask before they ring.

Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.

Do you cover Darwen, Accrington, Clitheroe and Rossendale?

Yes. Our engineers cover Blackburn and Darwen and the towns around them — Accrington, Oswaldtwistle and Great Harwood in Hyndburn, Clitheroe, Whalley and Langho in the Ribble Valley, and Haslingden and Rawtenstall in Rossendale. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.

Will you repair a system in Blackburn that another company installed?

Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and inverter repair.

Can you fit solar panels on a terraced house in Blackburn or Darwen?

Usually, yes. Terraced roofs here are often narrow, slated and broken up by chimney stacks and rear offshoots, so the survey looks closely at which slope gets the sun and what shades it; where a chimney shades part of the array, panel optimisers can stop it dragging the rest down. We check the roof covering and its condition before recommending anything, and a house in a conservation area can need planning permission, which we check before the survey. See solar panel installations.
