Solar in Manchester
Greater Manchester is putting solar on Manchester’s school roofs.
In November 2025 the Greater Manchester Combined Authority announced that the first five schools in its Powering Our Schools programme had been fitted with rooftop solar, four of them in Manchester: Longsight Community Primary, St Augustine’s Primary, St Paul’s C of E Primary and Unity Community Primary, alongside Worthington Primary in Trafford. Between them the five are expected to generate around 200,000 kilowatt-hours a year and save about 40 tonnes of carbon, and the programme is due to reach 35 schools across Greater Manchester, with the next phase now being planned as part of the city-region’s push to be carbon neutral by 2038.
A school roof in Longsight and a terrace roof in Levenshulme face the same Manchester weather, and the same slow decline in output if nobody checks the system. If yours is more than a few years old, a service will tell you what it is really generating, and solar panel cleaning is often the quickest win.

Why L&R
What you get from L&R in Manchester.
We know Manchester roofs
Manchester’s solar sits mostly on red-brick terraces and Edwardian semis with slate roofs, the 1930s semis of south Manchester and Trafford, and the post-war estates around Wythenshawe. The city has earned its reputation for rain: moss on the lower rows of panels and damp in roof-top isolators are two of the commonest things we find, and pigeons nesting under arrays are a regular call-out across the city. Many systems here went in during the feed-in tariff years and are now on their original inverter.
