Solar in Sunderland

Sunderland’s schools are saving with the Mayor’s solar panels.

In June 2026 the North East Combined Authority reported that 23 schools across Sunderland and Northumberland have now been fitted with solar panels through the Mayor’s Renewables Fund, backed by £700,000 from Great British Energy. Together the schools are expected to save more than £100,000 a year on electricity and cut nearly 85 tonnes of carbon annually, and Hudson Road Primary in Hendon was one of the first to switch on. Mayor Kim McGuinness said it was “hard to argue against green energy when it means lower bills for schools which frees up cash to spend on improving teaching.”

A school roof in Hendon and a terrace roof in Fulwell face the same North Sea weather, and the same slow decline in output if nobody checks the system. If yours went up in the feed-in tariff years, a service will tell you what it is really generating, and if the inverter has given up, inverter repair gets it earning again without touching the panels.

Why L&R

What you get from L&R in Sunderland.

We know Wearside roofs

Sunderland has a housing type all of its own: the single-storey Sunderland cottages of Millfield, Pallion and Hendon, with long shallow roofs that take a neat array but need the right fixings for a low pitch. Around them sit Victorian terraces, the 1930s semis of Fulwell and Barnes, and the 1960s and 70s estates of Washington new town. The coast is never far away: salt air and wind work on isolators and connectors, and gulls make a mess of arrays from Seaburn to Ryhope. Many of the systems we see went in during the feed-in tariff years with a single string inverter that is now ageing.
