Solar in Durham
1,700 County Durham homes are getting solar and insulation.
In July 2025 believe housing, the county’s largest social landlord, announced a £15.6 million programme to upgrade more than 1,700 of its homes across County Durham over three years, built on £7.8 million from the Government’s Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund and matched by its own investment. The work, led by RE:GEN Group, targets homes rated below EPC band C and combines loft and cavity wall insulation, better ventilation, heating controls, energy-efficient lighting and solar panels. It follows an earlier programme that upgraded 3,477 homes, and the landlord says the aim is homes that are “warmer, healthier, and more energy-efficient.”
Plenty of privately owned homes in Durham’s former pit villages went solar in the feed-in tariff years, long before this programme, and those systems are now at the age where inverters start to fail. A service will tell you whether yours is still earning its keep; if generation has dropped or stopped altogether, inverter repair is usually the fix.

Why L&R
What you get from L&R in Durham.
We know County Durham roofs
Durham is two very different places for solar. In the city, stone terraces and the conservation area around the peninsula mean an installer has to check what is allowed before a single bracket goes on, and student lets need an owner who understands what the inverter is doing. Out in the county it is colliery terraces in Stanley, Consett and Ferryhill, 1950s semis in Newton Hall and Spennymoor, and exposed hillside villages up the Deerness and Wear valleys where wind and driving rain test fixings and isolators. Many of the systems we see went in during the feed-in tariff years with a single string inverter that is now ageing.

Questions
The things people ask before they ring.
Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.
Do you cover Chester-le-Street, Consett, Stanley and Bishop Auckland?
Yes. Our engineers cover Durham city and the whole of County Durham, from Chester-le-Street and Consett in the north to Bishop Auckland, Spennymoor and Newton Aycliffe in the south, and out to Peterlee and Seaham on the coast. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.
Will you repair a system in Durham that another company installed?
Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and inverter repair.
Can I have solar panels on a house in Durham’s conservation area?
Often, yes, but it depends on the roof and whether the building is listed. Panels on a roof slope that faces the street can need planning permission inside the conservation area, and a listed building needs consent. We check this before the survey and tell you where you stand, and every install is by our own MCS certified engineers. See solar panel installations.
