Solar in Darlington

A 40MW solar farm is being built on Darlington’s doorstep.

In February 2025 Aura Power confirmed £33.1 million of finance from Rabobank for its Burtree Lane solar farm at Whessoe, on the northern edge of Darlington, with construction due to start in summer 2025 and the site expected to be energised in 2026. The 40MW project, consented by Darlington Borough Council in 2022, comes with a 46% biodiversity net gain and a £20,000-a-year community benefit fund for local projects. Aura Power director Ben Moore called it “a fantastic next step for us in developing our operational UK solar portfolio.”

A solar farm the size of Burtree Lane runs on the same principle as the twelve panels on a semi in Mowden or Hurworth: it only pays while it is generating. If your own system went up a decade ago and has never been looked at, a service will tell you where it stands, and if it has stopped, solar panel repair covers any installer’s system, including ones whose original fitter is long gone.

Why L&R

What you get from L&R in Darlington.

We know Darlington roofs

Darlington is a railway town, and it shows on the roofs: long Victorian terraces around Bank Top and Albert Hill, the red-brick semis of Cockerton and Harrowgate Hill, and the newer estates of West Park, Faverdale and Middleton St George where panels are often part of the original build. It is one of the drier corners of the North East, in the lee of the Pennines, so a well-placed south-facing array does well here, but the same open country brings wind across the Tees plain that works on fixings and isolators. Many of the systems we see went in during the feed-in tariff years with a single string inverter that is now ageing.
