Solar in Edinburgh
Edinburgh’s community solar co-op has hit ten years and 11 million kWh.
In December 2025 Edinburgh Community Solar Co-operative marked ten years of generating power on City of Edinburgh Council buildings, with 11 million kWh produced across 30 sites, including 18 schools and the council’s Waverley Court headquarters. The panels were fitted at no cost to the host buildings, funded by around 600 community investors, most of them local residents, and the co-op estimates they have avoided more than 2,000 tonnes of CO2 and saved the council over £500,000 on energy. Council Leader Jane Meagher said the figures “speak for themselves”, and the co-op plans a further share offer to fund more installations.
Ten-year-old arrays are exactly the age when things start to go wrong: an original inverter reaching the end of its life, a string that has dropped out, connectors weathered by a decade of Edinburgh winters. A service will tell you where yours stands, and if the numbers do not add up, solar panel repair is the next call.

Why L&R
What you get from L&R in Edinburgh.
We know Edinburgh roofs
Edinburgh’s solar sits on the stone villas and semis of Morningside, Corstorphine and Blackhall, the 1930s bungalows across the west of the city, the colony houses of Leith and Stockbridge, and the newer estates at Cramond, Gilmerton and out to Livingston. Much of the city centre is a World Heritage Site and a conservation area, and a lot of tenements are listed, so where panels can go, and whether they need consent from the City of Edinburgh Council, has to be settled before anything is ordered — we tell you what’s possible on your roof before you commit. The east coast is drier than the west but windier: the Forth throws salt at north-facing roofs, and wind loads fixings on exposed sites. Many of the systems we’re called to were fitted in the feed-in tariff years and are now on their original inverter.

Questions
The things people ask before they ring.
Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.
Do you cover Leith, Corstorphine, Musselburgh and Livingston?
Yes. Our engineers cover the whole of Edinburgh and the Lothians, plus Fife and the Borders. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.
Can I put solar panels on a listed building or in a conservation area in Edinburgh?
Often, yes, but it depends on the building and the roof. In a conservation area, panels on a roof slope that faces the street usually need consent; on a listed building, any panels need listed building consent. Our engineer looks at the roof and tells you what is likely to be allowed before you commit to anything. See solar panel installations.
Do solar panels in Edinburgh need maintaining?
Yes, though not much. An annual check of the panels, inverter, isolators and wiring catches small faults before they cost you a summer’s generation, and it is the only way to know a system is producing what it should. We maintain systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading. See solar panel servicing.
