Solar in Wiltshire

A solar park near Chippenham has won permission on appeal.

In January 2026 a government planning inspector granted permission for Swallett Energy Park, a solar park the size of 160 football pitches on a 114-hectare site between Christian Malford and Dauntsey, near Chippenham. Wiltshire Council had refused it in March 2025 over its impact on the landscape and nearby heritage sites; the developer, Exagen, appealed in September 2025, and a public inquiry followed in December. More than 50 letters of objection were lodged, with Christian Malford Parish Council among the opponents, but inspector Ben Plenty found that enhanced hedges and tree groups would keep the structure of the field boundaries, giving a “largely non-invasive and restorative impact” on the landscape. Exagen says the park will generate enough electricity for 9,400 homes.

A solar park feeds the grid; the panels on your own roof power your house first, and that is where the savings are. Plenty of Wiltshire homes, farmhouses and barns went solar in the feed-in tariff years, and if yours has gone quiet, solar panel repair finds out why. Adding battery storage lets you keep more of what the panels make for the evening.

Why L&R

What you get from L&R in Wiltshire.

We know Wiltshire roofs

Wiltshire’s roofs follow its geology. Bath stone terraces and cottages in Bradford-on-Avon, Corsham and Trowbridge, and flint, brick and thatch in the chalk valleys around Salisbury and the Vale of Pewsey, each need their own fixings and cable routes, while the post-war and newer estates of Chippenham, Melksham and Amesbury take panels far more easily. Large parts of the county sit in the Cotswolds, North Wessex Downs and Cranborne Chase national landscapes, and old towns like Malmesbury, Devizes and Marlborough have conservation areas, so we check what is allowed before the survey. Up on Salisbury Plain and the downs the wind tests every fixing, and on a farm a ground-mounted array is often the better answer.

Questions

The things people ask before they ring.

Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.

Do you cover Salisbury, Chippenham, Trowbridge and the rest of Wiltshire?

Yes. Our engineers cover the whole county — Salisbury, Wilton and Amesbury in the south, Trowbridge, Bradford-on-Avon, Westbury and Warminster in the west, Chippenham, Corsham, Calne, Melksham and Devizes in the middle, and Malmesbury, Marlborough and Royal Wootton Bassett in the north. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.

Will you repair a system in Wiltshire that another company installed?

Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and inverter repair.

Can I have solar panels on a thatched or listed cottage in Wiltshire?

Not on the thatch itself, but that rarely rules solar out: a garage, a barn roof or a ground-mounted array in the garden or paddock often works instead. A listed building needs listed building consent, and in a conservation area panels on a roof slope that faces the street can need planning permission, so we check before the survey and tell you where you stand. See solar panel installations.
