Solar in Dorset

Dorset Council is helping homeowners buy solar and batteries together.

In August 2026 Dorset Council opened a new round of its Switch Together solar scheme with the group-buying company of the same name. Homeowners and businesses anywhere in the Dorset Council area could register free of charge, receive an offer for solar panels and battery storage from vetted installers, and decide with no obligation whether to go ahead, with a refundable deposit only taken on acceptance. The council says last year’s round helped more than 200 households cut their energy bills, and this round’s registration ran through to late September 2026.

If you already went solar in an earlier round, or under the feed-in tariff a decade ago, the question now is whether the system still does what it did in year one. A service will tell you, and if the panels are fine but you export most of what you make, adding battery storage to an existing array is often a better next step than new panels.

Why L&R

What you get from L&R in Dorset.

We know Dorset roofs

Dorset has some of the highest sunshine hours in Britain, so a well-placed array here should earn its keep. The county is two places for solar. The conurbation in the east — Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch — is Edwardian villas, 1930s semis and bungalows, with salt, sand and gulls off the coast. The rest is small towns and villages: stone and brick cottages in Sherborne and Beaminster, a good number of them thatched or listed, Purbeck stone roofs around Swanage, and post-war and modern estates around Dorchester and Weymouth. Listed buildings and the county’s many conservation areas need a check on what is allowed before anything is ordered, and thatch needs a different approach altogether. Many of the systems we’re called to were fitted in the feed-in tariff years and are now on their original inverter.

Questions

The things people ask before they ring.

Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.

Do you cover Dorchester, Weymouth, Bridport and Sherborne?

Yes. Our engineers cover the whole of Dorset, from the Bournemouth conurbation to Weymouth, Bridport and Lyme Regis in the west and Shaftesbury and Gillingham in the north. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.

My installer in Dorset has stopped trading. Can you still look after my system?

Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and solar panel servicing.

Can I put solar panels on a listed cottage or a thatched roof?

Sometimes. A listed building needs listed building consent for any panels, and a conservation area may restrict street-facing slopes; our engineer looks at the roof and tells you what is likely to be allowed before you commit. Thatch is not suitable for roof-mounted panels, but a ground-mounted array or panels on an outbuilding are often the answer. See solar panel installations.
