Solar in Somerset
Solar panels are on Somerset Council’s list of grant-funded home upgrades.
In February 2026 Somerset Council said it had secured an additional £1 million from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s Warm Homes: Local Grant scheme, to help homeowners and private rental residents across Somerset save money on energy bills by retrofitting their homes. It supplements the approximately £6 million already allocated for distribution by the council from 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2028, with the Centre for Sustainable Energy as delivery partner. Measures the grant can pay for include solar panels, air source heat pumps, storage heaters, insulation, new doors and windows, and ventilation. Councillor Sarah Wakefield said: “I welcome the news that we have been awarded additional funds to help us continue to deliver clean, efficient and more cost-effective energy for Somerset residents.”
Whether panels come through a grant or not, they only cut bills while they keep working. Plenty of Somerset roofs, from Taunton semis to Levels farmhouses, went solar in the feed-in tariff years, and those systems are now at the age where inverters start to fail. A service shows what yours is really producing, and if generation has dropped, solar panel repair finds out why.

Why L&R
What you get from L&R in Somerset.
We know Somerset roofs
Somerset’s roofs follow its stone. Around Yeovil, Crewkerne and Martock, golden Ham stone houses carry heavy roofs and many are listed; Street, Somerton and Glastonbury are built of grey blue lias; and Wells and Shepton Mallet use Mendip stone, while Frome has steep streets of older stone terraces. Bridgwater was a tile-making town, so clay double Roman tiles are everywhere, and they need hooks made for that tile. Taunton and Bridgwater add Victorian brick terraces and newer estates, and thatch survives across the villages. On the Levels, around Langport and Burrowbridge, flooding decides where an inverter goes, and on the coast and up on Exmoor, wind and salt test every fixing.

Questions
The things people ask before they ring.
Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.
Do you cover Taunton, Yeovil, Bridgwater and Frome?
Yes. Our engineers cover the whole of Somerset — Taunton, Wellington and Bridgwater in the west, Burnham-on-Sea, Watchet and Minehead on the coast, Yeovil, Chard, Crewkerne and Ilminster in the south, and Street, Glastonbury, Wells, Shepton Mallet and Frome in the east. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.
Will you repair a system in Somerset that another company installed?
Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and inverter repair.
Can I have solar panels on a Ham stone or listed house, or near Exmoor?
Often, yes, but it depends on the building and where it sits. A listed building needs listed building consent, and in a conservation area, which many Somerset town centres and villages have, panels on a roof slope that faces the street can need planning permission. Exmoor National Park and the Mendip Hills and Quantock Hills National Landscapes can add to that. We check before the survey and tell you where you stand. Where the house roof won’t work, a barn or outbuilding often will. See solar panel installations.
