Solar in Swansea

In Swansea, a Llansamlet steel firm has just covered its roof in solar panels.

In September 2026 Swansea Bay News reported that Afon Engineering, the heavy steel fabricator on Camffwrd Way at Swansea Vale Business Park in Llansamlet, is fitting 699 solar panels to its factory roof. The 329 kW system is expected to take around 60 tonnes of carbon a year out of the business and, on the company’s own figures, to repay its £250,000 cost within four years through lower bills. Most of that sum, £200,000, is a Development Bank of Wales Green Business Loan, with the firm, which has been on Swansea Vale since 1979 and now employs more than 60 people, funding the rest.

A four-year payback is the maths of a big flat roof and a heavy daytime load, but the principle is the same on a semi in Morriston or Sketty: the panels only earn while every string is working. If your system is ten years old and has never been checked, book a service; if it has stopped altogether, solar panel repair is the place to start.

Why L&R

What you get from L&R in Swansea.

We know Swansea roofs

Swansea’s solar sits on the Victorian and Edwardian terraces of Uplands, Brynmill and Sandfields, the hillside rows of Townhill and Mayhill, the 1930s semis of Sketty and Killay, the post-war estates at Penlan and Blaenymaes, and the newer homes along the SA1 waterfront and at Penllergaer. It is one of the wettest cities in Britain, with the weather coming straight in off the Atlantic over the Gower, so moss and lichen on the glass and water in roof-top isolators are a normal part of looking after a system here, and the bay puts salt on anything facing south. Many of the systems we’re called to were fitted in the feed-in tariff years and are now on their original inverter.

Questions

The things people ask before they ring.

Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.

Do you cover the Gower, Neath, Port Talbot and Llanelli?

Yes. Our engineers cover the whole of Swansea and the Gower, across to Neath and Port Talbot, and west to Llanelli, Ammanford and Carmarthen. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.

My Swansea installer has stopped trading. Can you still look after my system?

Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and inverter repair.

Is solar worth it in Swansea’s weather?

Yes. Panels generate from daylight, not heat, and a well-placed array in Swansea produces a worthwhile share of a home’s electricity over the year. What matters more is the roof: its direction, its pitch and what shades it. A battery lets you use more of what you generate rather than exporting it. An engineer surveys the roof and your usage before we recommend anything. See solar panel installations and battery storage.
