Solar in Milton Keynes
Milton Keynes is opening up community-owned solar to local organisations.
In July 2026 the MK Citizen reported the launch of Community Solar for MK Organisations, a scheme from Milton Keynes Community Energy, a not-for-profit community benefit society running since 2015, with launch support from Milton Keynes City Council’s Green Business Fund. The society funds, installs, owns and maintains the panels, and the host organisation buys the electricity at a rate below grid prices with no upfront cost. It has already put solar on schools, libraries and council buildings around Milton Keynes, including Camphill Communities MK, generating more than 3 million kWh since 2015, with surplus income going to Home Energy MK to help households struggling with bills.
The no-upfront-cost model will sound familiar to Milton Keynes homeowners in Bletchley, Wolverton or Newport Pagnell who had panels fitted under a rent-a-roof deal years ago, systems that have often never been checked since. A service tells you whether they are still earning their keep; if the inverter has given up, solar panel repair gets it generating again.

Why L&R
What you get from L&R in Milton Keynes.
We know Milton Keynes roofs
Milton Keynes is unusual: most of its housing went up after 1970, on a grid, with the roofs planned rather than inherited. That gives a lot of well-oriented, uncomplicated pitched roofs with modern timbers, from the 1970s and 80s estates of Fishermead and Netherfield to the newer homes at Broughton, Wavendon and Tattenhoe, plus the older brick terraces of Bletchley, Wolverton and Stony Stratford. The city’s famous trees are the main shading problem, and some estates have low-pitched or flat roofs that need a different mounting system. Inland, dry and flat, it is kind to solar; what we find most is dust, pigeons and inverters reaching the end of their life. Many of the systems we’re called to were fitted in the feed-in tariff years and are now on their original inverter.
