Solar in Leicester
Leicester’s newest council homes come with solar built in.
In August 2026 Leicester City Council welcomed the first tenants into eight fully adapted bungalows at its £11 million housing development on the site of the former Saffron Lane velodrome. The 1.4-hectare brownfield site will eventually provide 38 new council homes, a mix of houses and bungalows, built by Lovell on the council’s behalf with £700,000 from the Government’s Brownfield Land Release Fund. Every home has an energy-efficient design that includes heat pumps and solar panels, which the council says will help reduce household energy bills, and the remaining homes are being handed over in phases.
Solar fitted from day one is the norm on new homes now, but most of Leicester’s panels sit on older roofs across the city, where a decade or more of weather takes its toll. Cleaning restores output on a grimy array, and a service catches the faults you cannot see from the ground before they cost you a summer’s generation.

Why L&R
What you get from L&R in Leicester.
We know Leicester roofs
Leicester’s solar sits on the long Victorian terraces of Highfields, Belgrave and Clarendon Park, the Edwardian villas of Stoneygate, the 1930s semis of Evington, Knighton and Braunstone, and the post-war estates at Beaumont Leys and New Parks. Most of the city is low and gently sloping, so shading is mostly from trees rather than hills, and the roofs are simple to work on. Inland weather is kinder than the coast; what we find most is dust on the glass, moss on north-facing edges and inverters reaching the end of their life. Many of the systems we’re called to were fitted in the feed-in tariff years and are on their original inverter.
