Solar in Birmingham

Birmingham has finished retrofitting 2,000 council homes, solar included.

In September 2025 Birmingham City Council marked the completion of a £111 million retrofit of around 2,000 council homes, delivered with Equans and backed by a £24 million grant from Wave 2.1 of the Government’s Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund. Partners gathered at two tower blocks, Bradfield House and Greenfield House in Sheldon, to mark the milestone. The work combined external wall insulation, new windows and doors, loft insulation, solar panels, high heat retention storage heaters and smart hot water tanks, and the council says retrofitted homes now reach at least EPC Band C, with some at Band A.

Plenty of Birmingham homes had solar fitted long before this programme, often in the feed-in tariff years, and those systems are now at the age where inverters start to fail. A service will tell you whether yours is still earning its keep; if generation has dropped or stopped altogether, inverter repair is usually the fix.

Why L&R

What you get from L&R in Birmingham.

We know Birmingham roofs

Birmingham’s solar sits on the red-brick terraces of Selly Oak, Kings Heath and Erdington, the Edwardian villas of Moseley and Harborne, the 1930s semis that ring the city from Hall Green to Great Barr, and the post-war estates at Castle Vale and Chelmsley Wood. Most of it faces every which way, so which slope gets the panels matters more than in a grid-planned city. It is far from the sea, so salt isn’t the problem; dust off the roads and pigeons nesting under arrays are. Many of the systems we’re called to were fitted in the feed-in tariff years and are now on their original inverter.
