Solar in Worcestershire

Two Worcester swimming pools have gone solar.

In March 2025 Worcester City Council reported that solar panels had been installed on the roofs of Lower Wick Swimming Pool and Perdiswell Leisure Centre, to help reduce both their energy bills and their carbon dioxide emissions. The work was paid for through the Government’s Swimming Pool Support Fund, with £195,000 for Perdiswell and nearly £60,000 for Lower Wick. At Perdiswell, panels went on the pool roof first, with more to follow on the sports hall roof once its felt covering is replaced; with both stages complete, carbon emissions there will fall by 84 tonnes a year. Lower Wick manager Andrew Massey said: “The solar panels will make a real difference to the success of the pool for many years to come.”

A pool roof is a big array with a team keeping an eye on it; a house roof in Warndon, St John’s or Droitwich usually has no one watching. Plenty of Worcestershire homes have had panels for ten years or more, and that is when inverters start to give up. A service shows what yours is really producing, and if it has stopped altogether, inverter repair is usually the fix.

Why L&R

What you get from L&R in Worcestershire.

We know Worcestershire roofs

Worcestershire’s roofs change from one end of the county to the other. Worcester, Pershore, Evesham and Droitwich keep black-and-white timber-framed buildings, many of them listed, alongside Georgian brick and long Victorian terraces. Kidderminster grew on the carpet trade, so there are streets of red-brick terraces near the old mills, while Redditch was expanded as a new town, with estates of plainer, more modern roofs. Malvern has Victorian villas climbing the slopes of the hills, where wind and rain test every fixing. The Severn and the Teme flood around Worcester, Upton-upon-Severn, Bewdley and Tenbury Wells, so where an inverter goes matters, and in the Vale of Evesham a barn or packing shed often takes panels better than the house.

Questions

The things people ask before they ring.

Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.

Do you cover Worcester, Kidderminster, Redditch and Malvern?

Yes. Our engineers cover the whole of Worcestershire — Worcester, Droitwich Spa and Malvern in the middle of the county, Pershore, Evesham, Broadway and Upton-upon-Severn in the south, Kidderminster, Stourport-on-Severn, Bewdley and Tenbury Wells in the west, and Bromsgrove and Redditch in the north-east. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.

Will you repair a system in Worcestershire that another company installed?

Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and inverter repair.

Can I have solar panels on a black-and-white timber-framed house in Worcestershire?

Often, yes, but it depends on the building. Many of the county’s timber-framed houses are listed, and a listed building needs listed building consent. In a conservation area, or on the edge of the Malvern Hills National Landscape, panels on a roof slope that faces the street can need planning permission. We check before the survey and tell you where you stand. Where the house roof won’t work, a garage, barn or outbuilding often will. See solar panel installations.
