Solar in Kent

A Kent council has cut its office electricity bill in half with solar.

In August 2026 Swale Borough Council reported that the 200-plus solar panels fitted to the roof of Swale House, its main office, had cut the building’s electricity bill by 55% between late March and June 2026. On sunny days the system exports what the office does not need, and 13,850 kWh had already been sold back to the grid, keeping 13,000 kg of CO2 out of the atmosphere. The council says the project is on track to pay for itself far quicker than predicted, and it is now looking at putting solar on other council-owned properties across the borough.

That 55% is the sort of figure a Kent household in Maidstone, Canterbury or Ashford sees when a system is working properly, and quietly loses when a string fault or a tired inverter goes unnoticed. Inverter repair restores the output; a regular service catches the problem before your bill does.

Why L&R

What you get from L&R in Kent.

We know Kent roofs

Kent is the sunniest county in England by most measures, so a healthy system here should be generating strongly. Its solar sits on the Victorian terraces and 1930s semis of the Medway towns and Maidstone, the Edwardian villas of Tunbridge Wells and Canterbury, the big post-war and modern estates around Ashford, Dartford and Ebbsfleet, and the seaside bungalows and terraces of Thanet and the Isle of Sheppey. The coast brings salt, wind and gulls; inland, the county’s orchards and woods bring pollen and shade. Kent also has more listed buildings and Kent-peg-tile roofs than most counties, and those tiles need the right hooks. Many of the systems we’re called to were fitted in the feed-in tariff years and are now on their original inverter.
