Solar in Cambridge
Cambridge’s electric bin lorries are getting their own solar park.
In January 2026 Cambridge City Council announced that construction had begun on the Waterbeach Renewable Energy Network, a £6.1 million scheme at the councils’ Waterbeach Depot jointly funded with South Cambridgeshire District Council and the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority. A one-megawatt solar system paired with a battery will feed 36 electric vehicle charging points, because the local grid does not have the capacity to power more electric bin lorries without it; the Greater Cambridge Shared Waste service plans to have 18 in operation by 2027, up from four when work began. Due for completion in late 2026, it is expected to supply 59% of the depot’s total energy needs. Councillor Rosy Moore called it “a landmark moment for cleaner, greener waste and recycling collections in Greater Cambridge.”
A battery beside the panels is the same choice many Cambridge households are now weighing up, because panels produce most around midday and most homes use their power in the evening. If your system in Chesterton, Cherry Hinton or out in the villages is on an ageing inverter, inverter repair or replacement is a natural moment to look at battery storage too.

Why L&R
What you get from L&R in Cambridge.
We know Cambridge roofs
Close to the centre, Cambridge is Victorian gault brick and slate: the pale terraces of Romsey, Petersfield and the streets off Mill Road, with narrow roof slopes, chimney stacks and rear extensions that decide how many panels will fit. Further out come the 1930s semis of Cherry Hinton and Chesterton, and the newer estates at Trumpington, Eddington, Cambourne and Northstowe. In the villages it is thatch, clunch and old clay tiles, often inside a conservation area. The weather is on your side, as this is one of the driest parts of the country, which makes an underperforming system here worth chasing. The catch is dust: soil blown off open fen and farmland settles on panels faster than most people expect.

Questions
The things people ask before they ring.
Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.
Do you cover Ely, Huntingdon, St Ives and the villages around Cambridge?
Yes. Our engineers cover Cambridge and the rest of Cambridgeshire, from Histon, Cottenham and Waterbeach to Sawston, Great Shelford and Cambourne, and out to Ely, Soham, St Ives, Huntingdon and St Neots; Peterborough has its own page. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.
Will you repair a system in Cambridge that another company installed?
Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and inverter repair.
Can you fit solar to a thatched or listed cottage in a village near Cambridge?
Not on the thatch itself, but there is usually another way. A listed cottage needs listed building consent, and in a village conservation area panels on a slope facing the street can need planning permission, so we check before the survey and tell you where you stand. A rear tiled slope, a garage or outbuilding, or a ground-mounted array in the garden is often the better answer. See solar panel installations.
