Solar in Hertfordshire
Watford’s leisure centre now runs on its own solar on sunny days.
In January 2026 Watford Borough Council published summer performance figures for the 680 solar panels installed at Watford Leisure Centre – Woodside in May 2025, working with its operating agent Everyone Active and Leisure Energy. The 282 kWp system is expected to generate around 255,700 kWh a year. Between June and August 2025 it produced approximately 113,000 kWh, meeting almost half of the centre’s electricity demand, and on particularly sunny days it regularly supplied all of its daytime electricity. The project was made possible by a £403,900 grant from Sport England’s Swimming Pool Support Fund, and the Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: “This is a fantastic example of how investing in renewable energy delivers real benefits for Watford.”
The pattern will be familiar to anyone with panels in St Albans, Hemel Hempstead or Stevenage: plenty of power in the middle of a summer day, much less when the family gets home. Battery storage moves that surplus into the evening, and a service first makes sure the panels and inverter you are building on are pulling their weight.

Why L&R
What you get from L&R in Hertfordshire.
We know Hertfordshire roofs
Hertfordshire is a county of planned towns and commuter suburbs, and each asks something different of a solar install. Letchworth’s Arts and Crafts cottages and Welwyn Garden City’s neo-Georgian streets come with their own estate rules on top of planning. Stevenage, Hemel Hempstead and Hatfield are post-war new towns, built in terraces and short runs of semis with simple, unbroken roof slopes that suit panels well. St Albans and Watford have Victorian and Edwardian terraces where a loft dormer can leave only part of the roof free, and the Chiltern edge around Tring and Berkhamsted brings flint, brick and conservation villages. Plenty of systems across the county date from the feed-in tariff years and are still on their first inverter.

Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.
Do you cover St Albans, Watford, Hemel Hempstead and Stevenage?
Yes. Our engineers cover the whole of Hertfordshire — St Albans, Harpenden and Hatfield, Watford, Bushey and Rickmansworth, Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamsted and Tring, Stevenage, Hitchin and Letchworth, and Hertford, Ware and Bishop’s Stortford in the east. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.
Will you repair a system in Hertfordshire that another company installed?
Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and inverter repair.
Do I need extra consent for solar panels in Letchworth or Welwyn Garden City?
Often, yes. Homes on the Letchworth Garden City estate come under the Heritage Foundation’s Scheme of Management, and its own guidance lists solar panels among the external changes that need its consent, separate from planning. Most of Welwyn Garden City sits inside the council’s Estate Management Scheme, where changes to your home can need consent too. We check before the survey and tell you where you stand. See solar panel installations.
