Our office is in Chelmsford, so Essex is our home county. From Colchester, Braintree and Harlow to Basildon, Brentwood, Southend-on-Sea and Clacton-on-Sea, our own engineers install solar PV and battery systems right across Essex, and repair and service systems fitted by any installer. We install our own systems and repair everyone else’s, so we know exactly how they fail.

Solar in Essex
61 Southend council houses are getting solar and heat pumps.
In September 2026 Southend-on-Sea City Council set out how it is stepping up its supply of energy-efficient council homes. Construction is due to begin shortly on 16 affordable homes at Eagle Way, and work is under way on nine at Lundy Close, both featuring air source heat pumps and solar panels, while the council is delivering its first certified Passivhaus homes at Bradford Bury in Leigh-on-Sea and Denton Avenue in Westcliff-on-Sea. Existing homes are being upgraded too: 207 on the Balmoral Estate are set for ground source heat pumps, and a further 61 houses will get solar panels and air source heat pumps over the next year. Councillor Irene Ferguson said: “Everyone deserves a safe, warm and affordable place to call home.”
Council homes in Southend are heading where plenty of private homes in Essex already are: solar on the roof and a heat pump for the heating. If your panels went up in the feed-in tariff years, a service shows what they are really producing before a heat pump adds to the load, and battery storage lets you keep more of the daytime output for the evening.

Why L&R
What you get from L&R in Essex.
We know Essex roofs
Essex packs a lot of different roofs into one county. Basildon and Harlow were built as post-war new towns, so there are whole estates of 1950s and 1960s terraces, some with flat roofs, where the mounting has to suit the roof rather than the brochure. Southend, Westcliff and Leigh-on-Sea are streets of Victorian and Edwardian terraces under slate and clay tile, while north Essex has timber-framed, weatherboarded and thatched cottages around Coggeshall, Thaxted and Saffron Walden, many of them listed. Essex is one of the driest counties in England, which suits solar, but salt air off the Tendring coast and the Blackwater and Crouch estuaries is hard on frames, fixings and isolators.

Questions
The things people ask before they ring.
Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.
Do you cover Basildon, Southend, Harlow and the Essex coast?
Yes. Our engineers cover the whole of Essex — Chelmsford, Braintree and Witham in the middle of the county, Basildon, Brentwood, Rayleigh and Southend-on-Sea in the south, Harlow, Epping and Saffron Walden in the west, and Colchester, Clacton-on-Sea, Frinton-on-Sea and Harwich in the north-east. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.
Will you repair a system in Essex that another company installed?
Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and inverter repair.
Can I have solar panels on a listed or thatched cottage in Essex?
Often, yes, but it depends on the building. A listed building needs listed building consent, and in a conservation area, such as the old centres of Coggeshall, Maldon or Saffron Walden, panels on a roof slope that faces the street can need planning permission. Panels can’t go on the thatch itself, so there an outbuilding or a ground-mounted array is usually the answer. We check before the survey and tell you where you stand. See solar panel installations.
