Solar in Colchester

Colchester’s university campus now runs partly on its own solar.

In February 2026 the University of Essex reported that more than 5,000 solar panels on rooftops and buildings at its Colchester Campus now generate around 8 per cent of the electricity the campus uses each year, peaking at 39 per cent in July 2025. The university’s latest sustainability report puts its annual carbon emissions down 58.3 per cent since 2013 and gas use down 39 per cent since 2019, with a net zero target of 2035. Its director of sustainability said further PV installations, lighting and heating upgrades are being explored, and that many of the recent arrays around Wivenhoe Park are visible from the ground.

A 39 per cent July and an 8 per cent year is an honest picture of how solar behaves in north Essex: strong summers carrying the rest. A Colchester homeowner gets the most out of those summers with panels that are clean and a system that is checked; cleaning and a service cover both, and we are only half an hour away in Chelmsford.

Why L&R

What you get from L&R in Colchester.

We know Colchester roofs

Colchester is under an hour from our Chelmsford office, so its roofs are among the ones we know best. The housing runs from the Victorian and Edwardian terraces of the town centre and New Town, through the 1930s semis of Lexden and Prettygate and the post-war estates at Greenstead and Monkwick, to the big new developments at Stanway, Highwoods and the garrison. Essex is one of the driest and sunniest parts of Britain, so a healthy system here should be generating well; what holds it back is usually dust and pollen on the glass, gulls on the coast, or an original feed-in tariff inverter reaching the end of its life.
