Solar in Ipswich
An Ipswich school fire has put older solar systems under the spotlight.
In June 2026 Suffolk County Council temporarily switched off the solar panel systems at 80 Suffolk schools after a fire at Sidegate Primary School in Ipswich on 24 June. Early discussions with Suffolk Fire and Rescue suggested the fire might be linked to panels the council had installed on one of the school’s roofs in 2012, and it followed two other school fires where solar panels were identified as a potential factor. Engineers were sent to isolate the systems fitted under the council’s 2011 to 2016 programme within two weeks, as a precaution while investigations continued; the council stressed there was no conclusive evidence linking the three fires.
Plenty of Ipswich rooftops went solar in that same 2011 to 2016 window, and a system of that age deserves a proper look at its DC connectors, isolators and inverter even when it seems fine. That is what a service is for; if something has already tripped or failed, solar panel repair is the starting point. We are based in Chelmsford, an easy run up the A12.

Why L&R
What you get from L&R in Ipswich.
We know Ipswich roofs
Ipswich sits on the slopes above the Orwell, so a lot of its Victorian terraces in the town centre and around Christchurch Park face every which way, and which slope gets the panels matters. The 1930s semis of Castle Hill and Rushmere, the post-war estates at Chantry and Whitton, and the newer homes at Kesgrave, Ravenswood and Martlesham are simpler. Suffolk is one of the driest and sunniest counties, so a healthy system here should be generating well; the estuary and the coast at Felixstowe bring salt and gulls, and the county’s pantiled roofs need the right hooks. Many of the systems we’re called to were fitted in the feed-in tariff years and are now on their original inverter.
