Solar in Suffolk

Mildenhall Hub’s car park is getting a solar roof.

In June 2026 West Suffolk Council started building solar canopies over the parking bays at Mildenhall Hub. Work began on Thursday 11 June, and once the canopies are complete they are expected to save over 124 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year, reduce the hub’s energy bills and protect it against future grid price increases. Over 50 trees are being planted alongside, with new bird and bat boxes, log heaps and compost piles. The scheme is part of the council’s roadmap to net zero for its own buildings and vehicles by 2039. Cllr Gerald Kelly, cabinet member for governance, regulatory and environment, called the start of construction “an exciting milestone as we begin transforming our existing car park into a source of renewable energy, without using additional land.”

A car park canopy is a big answer to a question plenty of Suffolk households face: where do the panels actually go? On a thatched cottage or a listed house in Lavenham, it is often a barn, a garage or the ground rather than the main roof. We survey for solar panel installations across the county, and if an older system is underperforming, solar panel repair is the place to start.

Why L&R

What you get from L&R in Suffolk.

We know Suffolk roofs

Suffolk’s older houses are built from what was to hand. Timber-framed houses in Lavenham, Kersey and Hadleigh are often plastered and colour-washed, many of them listed, and thatch survives across the villages. Flint and brick cottages with clay pantile roofs are common in the east of the county, and pantiles are brittle underfoot, so every fixing needs care. Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds have long Victorian terraces with chimneys and dormers to plan around; Kesgrave, Martlesham and Haverhill have newer estates with simpler roofs. Suffolk is one of the driest counties in England, but on the coast at Lowestoft, Southwold, Aldeburgh and Felixstowe, salt air and onshore wind are hard on frames, clamps and connectors.

Questions

The things people ask before they ring.

Not answered here? Call 0800 156 0191, Monday to Friday, 9:00am–5:00pm.

Do you cover Bury St Edmunds, Lowestoft, Felixstowe and Sudbury?

Yes. Our engineers cover the whole of Suffolk — Ipswich, Felixstowe, Woodbridge and Framlingham in the south-east, Lowestoft, Beccles, Southwold and Aldeburgh along the coast, Stowmarket and Needham Market in mid Suffolk, and Bury St Edmunds, Mildenhall, Newmarket, Haverhill, Sudbury and Hadleigh in the west and south. Call 0800 156 0191 or tell us your postcode in the fault finder and we’ll confirm cover.

Will you repair a system in Suffolk that another company installed?

Yes. We repair and service systems fitted by any installer, including installers who are no longer trading, and we work on any make of panel, inverter or battery. See solar panel repair and inverter repair.

Can I have solar panels on a thatched or listed cottage in Suffolk?

Often, yes, though usually not on the thatch itself. A listed building needs listed building consent, and in a conservation area — many Suffolk town centres and villages have one — panels on a roof slope that faces the street can need planning permission. Along the Suffolk Coast & Heaths there can be extra considerations too. We check before the survey and tell you where you stand. Where the house roof won’t work, a barn, a garage or a ground-mounted array often will. See solar panel installations.
